| MITCHELLS GOAL SEND UNITED TO SAFETY | ||||||||||||||||||||
| Chatham Town 0 Hastings United 1 (Sherwood 26 Min) Attendance 187 Mitchell Sherwoods goal after 26 minutes at the Maidstone Road Sports Ground today was the point in the season that mathematically shows that United are safe. This result surely the easiest game from now til the end of the season, and United grabbed three vital points to try and improve their place in the league. United arrived at Chatham with a full squad to choose from, but Ricky Spiller didnt even make it on the bench, United the same side that lost to Eastleigh last week had another chance to shine this week. One notable name on the bench 16 year old Dominic Cruttenden more than likely not playing at Danson Furness for the reserves due to the roughness of the opposition. United had the advantage of kicking up-hill and against the gastly wind which didnt help the side kicking with it. United didnt get out of the starting blocks, and really never got going in the whole 90 minutes. But Carl Rook started the chances, his shot from 25 yards out just went wide of goal, then Chatham took advantage of the wind, a corner flew into the keepers area, but the ball bobbled around dangerously, but United withstood the danger as Chris May grabbed the ball. United kept going, and were working in triangles, Steve Sands cross was met by Chris Honey who looped his header over the bar. Ryan Peters had time and space a minute later but his shot went miles wide. Then United won the match, Steve Ringwood played the ball to Mitchell Sherwood who ran past one, and approached a second, didnt look like to get the better of him, then suddenly a burst of speed forced Mitchell past the last man, and Mitchell dispatched the ball into the far bottom corner to give United a rather deserved lead, just ironic that Mitchell lives in the Chatham area. Then a long ball ran to Chris Honey who found himself goal-side of the last man, he ran into the area, with the last man tugging on behind him, but his shot was blocked by the spreaded keeper Gavin Hopper. Then Steve Ringwood crossed the ball through the area and Carl Rooks glancing header was cleared off the line, United pressured hard, but the long ball wasnt a good option for United who kept trying to find a way through the back line. Chris Honey also had a powerful shot in the area saved well by Hopper. Then the last action of the half was up the other end, Israel Amadi was causing a bit of trouble, constantly running at the defence, but Kedwell had their best chance when he was unmarked in the area, and his header went over the bar. United were the better in the first half, but Chathams strikers were having a bit too much time, but the defence were standing up well. But United fans had to savour that as the second half was to be worse. United started well, Steve Sands shot in the area was blocked by a defender, then the ball ran to our well known striker Mark Green who lobbed the ball which just went over the bar. Collins then went up the other end and his shot was scooped to Chris May who saved with ease. Amadi had his first shot on goal come on 50 minutes when his shot was saved by May, who was alert. Then a substitution saw ex-United player Steve Hafner introduced, he didnt look fit though, and didnt cause much trouble. Then Frannie Collins had surely the shot of the match when his ball was sliced so badly, the ball just ran over the line and ran back onto the pitch about 25 yards out. Steve Hafner then tried to impress to show Steve Lovell what hes missing, but he wasnt impressed when his shot went miles wide. United finally got up to the Chatham end, after putting up with about 10 minutes of pressure. But it wasnt much to cheer about because Ryan Peters free kick that was in a dangerous position went straight down keeper Hoppers throat. Haffy then had another chance to get an equaliser but his shot was similar to his first chance, absolutely crap, wide, I was happy, but the pressure wasnt good for our the NHS as a possibility of a equaliser was looking more than possible. Then the best chance of the match went to Frannie Collins, he beat Chris May to a long ball, his header was on target but Jimmy Elford ran to the line and kicked the ball off the line, United saved again, but for how long. Then the last action of the game saw a red card, the linesman flagged for a Hastings free kick, the ref gave it, then Chathams number 5 Andy Boyle made a comment to the linesman, who rightly flagged to the referee, the referee came over and then sent off Boyle for his comments to the linesman. A minute later United were relieved when the referee who had a poor game blew for full time. United put in a rather disappointing performance, but still won, so it was quite good, but we must improve, two games in which we have been quite poor, one goal scored, and one conceded, but Im sure Steve Lovell will get the lads playing better soon, as United move up the table again, Dartford get hammered at home to Eastleigh 5-1, Corby win at Newport IOW 1-0, while Burnham drew 1-1. ClaretnBlue Man Of The Match Mitchell Sherwood Impressive whenever on the ball, and scored a very good goal, but due to his age, cant really give his all, for the whole 90 minutes, give him time, hell be a great player. Mark Green and Jimmy Elford were on the fringes of the MOTM, but today was Mitchells day. |
