For the first time since 24th January Hastings United drew, this time quite evenly against Bashley, although Uniteds performance wasnt really convincing and must be improved if United are to achieve of anything at Longmead Stadium on Easter Monday.  But today United could count themselves lucky as Bashley came out and really had the best chances to win the match.

United started with the same side that won at Chatham a-week-ago, with Peter Sayers being named as a substitute after breaking his leg at Sittingbourne in August.  United started the better side, and showed their intention with Ryan Peters not afraid of having a pot shot two minutes into the match, but the shot went way wide of David Elms goal.  But Bashley wanted to get in on the action it turned into end to end stuff, with Stuart Cannie heading at Chris May after a Graeme Gee cross.

Carl Rook then showed confidence, his curling shot from outside the area went only a few yards wide of goal, getting closer, and then United registered their first shot on goal, Ryan Peters shot found the mitts of David Elm, but the shot was weak and was easy to collect.  Bashley showed some more pressure the ball went through the area and Richard Gillespies attempted over-head kick just caught the ball, but the ball went wide for a goal kick.

Well travelled player Andy Darnton saw his free kick go quite easily wide.  Then one of the saves of the match, Gary Connolly got into our half and hammered a low bouncing ball from 35 yards out, in bobbled about through the players and Chris May smothered it very well.  Then from a corner Ryan Peters had to head off the line to keep the scoreline goalless.

United were coming under the cosh, but possession was much in Uniteds favour and they were starting to make it count, Ryan Peters tried an overhead kick in the area, it went a bit wrong, but it needed Elm to palm it wide for a corner, Chris Honey also shot straight at Elm.  But then United took the lead, Carl Rook and Chris Honey had shots blocked, the ball fell to Steve Ringwood who turned past keeper Elm and scored into the empty net.

United got much stronger after going ahead, Chris Honey had his shot blocked and Carl Rook followed it up by shooting over the bar, very adventurous but the confidence was there.  On-form Mitchell Sherwood made in-roads into the defence, but his curling shot ended up at the keepers chest, and was held.  Steve Ringwood had a looping shot also tipped over well, one of the best shots of the match.

Bashley then had Stuart Cannie shoot at Chris May, United had held young striker Richard Gillespie very well, but it was only time before he would cause problems.  So the second half started much like the first, but this time Bashley really getting on top, Gillespie got freed down the left ran into the box, but put in a poor shot wide.

Mat Jones collected the ball near the edge of the area and stroked the ball at keeper May who was having a quite eventful game.  But while holding out for 50-odd minutes, Bashley deservedly drew level.  Dave Wakefield crossed to Richard Gillespie who beat keeper Chris May to the ball, the ball fell to Mark Lisk who had the ball and infront of an open goal, and Bashley equalised.

Gillespie was been given more space down the left, he had another chance to shoot, but May collected with ease.  Carl Rook then had two chances to give United the lead, and quite good ones, firstly his header went straight to Elm, and then his shot that he had quite a bit of time to pick his spot went wide, to annoy the home fans.

By this time United had two good penalty shouts, Steve Ringwood was running in the area chasing the ball, he collected but Mat Jones challenged for the ball he clearly won the ball, and Ringwood didnt make it look convincing enough for it to be awarded, then Carl Rook went down again quite easily which was a foul (if it had been outside the box wouldve been given but as its inside the box it wasnt) but the ref waved play on.

United couldve taken the lead on the 70 minute mark, a Steve Ringwood corner was flung in to the edge of the area where Chris Honey was unmarked, but his poorly directed header went straight to David Elm.  Graeme Gee on the other hand couldve given the side from the New Forest when his bobbling difficult shot was saved by May.  Bashley then had the chance of the match, Stuart Cannie got clear of the last man round keeper Chris May but he was put off by Jimmy Elford sliding in, but Elford hadnt touched the ball, so it was a goal kick rather than a goal.

Up the other end Carl Rooks shot from 20 yards just went over the crossbar, then Mitchell Sherwood got past Neil Morant and blasted a ball in and forced a error from Elm, when he collected the ball he spilled it, but gathered the ball up, it was the only mistake from a reliable keeper.  Bashley went in search of a winner with Connollys header going wide and Mat Jones forcing Chris May to a save at his near post.

Overall I thought United were poor, really their third game in which the midfield wasnt good enough, Steve Ringwood played better and the early goal gave him confidence, but others like Steve Sands and the front pair had an off game, and when you want to win only one player can have a poor game.  Defensively again good, Mortley not 100% fit but still good, so if things go well at Tonbridge and I mean in a way of all players working well and giving 100% we could cause an upset in a league where the leaders are very nervy at the moment.

ClaretnBlue Man Of The Match

Jimmy Elford

Again Captain hero, brilliant throughout, didnt panic when others did, didnt make a mistake all afternoon, great defending and a good attacking play from Jimmy.  A good afternoon from him.
