Hastings United continued their yo-yo form of late by winning another home game, this time ending the fantastic run of 12 or so continuous matches unbeaten going into this match.  But at the end of the day some absolute crap shooting by Banbury, which included 14 of their 17 attempts being off target.  United took advantage, played a steady game, and in the end deserved the victory.

United didnt make any changes to the side that lost to Tonbridge on Monday except the inclusion of Ryan Peters in the middle of midfield, and Steve Sands went to right wing.  The match started franticly, Banbury having a shot after 12 seconds but Chris Potters adventurous looping shot was well held by Chris May.  Uniteds midfield was improving and the wingers caused Banbury problems at times, but Ryan Peters free kick was well held by the experienced Simon Tricker, then Mitchell Sherwood went on a run but his shot was deflected away for a corner.

But Banbury had the first real chance, Wayne Blossom got clear of Russell Eldridge, but Mark Green put him off and Blossom sliced the ball very weakly, and Chris May claimed the ball.  But Simon Tricker had to be on his best a minute later when Russell Eldridges cross found Chris Honey in the box, whos bullet of a header was very well saved by Tricker, when the ball was destined for the top corner.  Then Chris again got in with the defence and headed wide a minute later.

But poor old Wayne Blossom had an afternoon to forget, firstly he was released onside one-on-one, and he shot wide of goal, then another dubious onside call, Redknap crossed the ball to Blossom at the back post who headed wide of goal when it seemed easier to score.  Then from a corner, Blossom got the ball hit it at Chris May, the ball rebounded to Blossoms knee and the ball was eventually cleared by Mark Green.  But United had to thank Mark Green and the defence again when Banbury shouldve taken the lead, from another corner, the ball went through the box, Blossom hit the first shot, which hit Mark Green on the line, then Redknap shot at Jimmy Elford, then Chris Potter hit Mark Green with the ball.

United had rode their luck, but things were changing, United looked like they had more fluency in them for once, using their wingers at every attempt, and suddenly United were getting on top, Carl Rooks curling low shot was palmed away by Tricker, Mark Green at the end of the pack from a corner missed a golden opportunity from six yards out, he shot past the post, obviously the wrong side.  Carl Rook also headed at the keeper.

But the deadlock was broken on 39 minutes, a long ball to Mitchell Sherwood, Mitchell got in a great header into the path of Chris Honey who was side to side with Kieran Sullivan, suddenly Sullivan slipped, Honey raced through and chipped Simon Tricker, a great goal, and entirely deserved for a guy whod never give up.  Then a similar pattern Mitchell Sherwood again picked up the ball and ran at the rather frightened defence who couldnt match Mitchells pace, Mitchell passed to Chris Honey whos strong shot, was weakened by a deflection, but Tricker did manage to gather the ball (well just about) thats how the half ended, United rode their luck at times, but playing well they deserved the lead.

Banbury did as we thought attack and they really dominated the possession throughout the second half.  Wayne Blossom was in on the act again this half, but yet again wide from just inside the area, the misses were becoming costly for Banbury as they got frustrated, and Wayne Blossom headed over from a corner.  United did have some share of the possession, somehow Mitchell (a left winger) was down the right wing he put in a devilish cross, somehow Carl Rook didnt manage to make contact with it, Ryan Peters ended the chance with a blasting shot going over the bar.

The introduction of Mark Sims who scored a great overhead kick against Hastings at Banbury which won the match did trigger more ideas from Banbury, Chris Potters curling shot went wide, and then Sims turned his marker Peter Mortley, and Hit a crisp shot just over the bar, they were getting closer, but one notable move was Wayne Blossom moving from centre forward to left back, just shows how good hes rated.

Banbury were pushing at United, United were really trying hard to not let slip like we did half way through our season, the defence was putting off their front men, George Redknap was marked very well and was denied time on the ball.  But Steve Lovell for the first time substituted Carl Rook that was just after the referee brandishing two yellow cards to Banbury players Adrian Fuller, and Jason Allen for dissent.  But Banbury were unlucky again, Wayne Blossom kept the ball in at the back post and his acute shot was cleared off the line by Mark Green.

United on the back foot, yes we were, but United attacked in confidence but never took hold of the ball, never went to the corners, but Banbury kept coming back but George Redknap messed their last chance right up when a good cross game in and he headed hopelessly wide.  United had won again, 10 points from 15 at home, and another run starting, hope it can continue until the end of the season.

Banbury didnt look anything special, continuous diving especially in the area, Wayne Blossom was a right one, diving throughout, but the ref who had a good second half did give some dives as free kicks, the linesmen were crap, but never mind, you cant complain with three points.

ClaretnBlue Man Of The Match

Mark Green

Very very hard to choose, Ryan Peters, and Chris Honey were tremendous today, but Mark Green on the line twice and one block off the line, his marking is second to none with any other defender Ive seen this season, he was superb, where would we be if we had him from the start of the season??
