| WHAT A LAUGH | |||||||||||||||||||||
| Ashford Town 3 (Henham OG 23 Min, 90 Min, Thorogood 75 Min Pen) Hastings United 1 (Ringwood 60 Min) Attendance 390 A match where both sets of supporters were leaving the ground laughing their heads off after a hilarious refereeing performance by one Mr I. Woodward. He sent four players off all from Hastings United when in reality worse challenges went without caution. Even Robin Powell who is a referee was bewildered, United matched their Kent opponents even with eight players, even with Simon Glover who I remember playing for Dover (I think) when he dived there, he did the same today. United kept the side that beat Erith but lost to Kings Lynn. United never seemed to get out of the dressing room, a goalmouth scramble after eight minutes, United blocked Simon Elliots shot and cleared their lines. From a corner Greg Nessling came and missed but it was a shame that Rob Gillman headed wide with an open goal on his doorstep. Ashford took the lead when Azzopardis knee high cross hit David Henhams foot and into the back of the net, nobody could believe it all the luck in the world, but thats football. United then registered their only real shot on goal in the first half when Mark Goodwin got round the defence but his shot from a acute angle went down the keepers throat. Ryan Peters then saw his free kick go just over the bar, I believe for a stat, one of his first free kicks off target. Then Simon Glover got down the left, Nessling was off his line, but Glovers attempted lob was well saved by Greg. That was it for the first half at a rather cold Kingsnorth. Both sides made changes, Danny Ellis whos only 18 came on, and got into the game quickly, and set up Mitchell Sherwood who crossed to Carl rook who flicked the ball on, and Steve Ringwood hammered the ball home from about five yards out. United stepped up a gear and started playing along the ground, but while bringing their confidence up, David Henham went too far, he was the last man, he tried doing a trick, Joby Thorogood tackled him, a one-on-one and Greg Nessling who came off his line superbly saved. But things started going wrong at the other end, keeper Whitehouse received the ball from the defender, Goodwin came in tackled him, but the keeper redeemed himself by clearing his lines. Carl Rook who was quick effective had his chance of the match, he turned his man well and shot wide. Then something called a dive also called cheating, Glover went into the box, Henham got in front of Glover, Henham went down to tackle, and Glover went over when no contact from Henham who was in front of him, but the referee bullsd up and fell for it. Joby Thorogood put the ball into the left hand corner. Then controversy in the middle, a free kick was to be taken, but referee Woodward went to Danny Ellis and sent him off, it was later found out that the Ashford player spat at Ellis, and Ellis turned round a smacked him one. Ellis was sent off, but also Carl Rook went to the ref to asked him what it was for, and the referee gave Rook his second yellow to send him off. Then United were down to eight men, a long ball up field, Thorogood and Nessling went for the ball, Thorogood got to the ball first, but Nessling had his leg going, and he kicked him accidentally, the ref didnt realise that Nessling wasnt the last man, but Nessling was sent off. Russell Eldridge took over in goal, and did well. But it was a sad sight to see Joby Thorogood being stretchered off. Harry Hrehorow and Simon Elliot both saw their shots saved by Russell, but even with eight men United did attack, but many times Ashford caught out United, but any decent side wouldve finished us off big-time, but they didnt, however, United gave them another goal, the cross from Glover came in, it deflected at David Henham and went in past a surprised Russell Eldridge. Then the most stupid sending off, Ricky Spiller was down by the corner flag, Ashfords Dan Barham went crashing into Spiller, it took Spiller out, when Spiller got back up he pushed (from what I saw) Barham back, although when the foul was flagged by the linesman, he rapidly waved his flag (in other words a dangerous foul) Mr Woodward then sent off Ricky Spiller, and only booked Dan Barham, the most stupid decision ever. Then the ref didnt realise that United only had seven players, and didnt abandon it straight away, he instead played a bit more then blew up for full time. United fans in bitter anger, now four players likely to be out for crucial games, Danny Ellis deserved his red card, but the Ashford guy didnt get anything. Carl Rook was unlucky, so was Greg Nessling, and Ricky Spiller. But the anger didnt stop there, in the car park some old weird Ashford fan(s) started having a slagging match with some of our supporters, it calmed down by United fans ignoring them. United didnt play well, but Ashford were crap, and they still won, but United need to pick themselves up, now with Fleet coming on Tuesday, and Salisbury City next Saturday. ClaretnBlue Man Of The Match Steve Ringwood Played well, got stuck in and tried to calm Carl Rook down but to no avail. Not much separated the players today, Mark Green another outstanding match. |
