WATER
IS LIFE
Subject: ENGLISH, SCIENCE,
ECONOMICS
Grade Level: SENIOR SECONDARY
SCHOOL: 1- 3
Introduction:
Water
is essential for the survival of man and for all forms of life. It is used
for domestic, Industrial, Agricultural purposes among others. Domestically,
water is used for bathing, drinking, laundry and others. In the area of
Agriculture, water is used for irrigation, farming, fishing and the like,
for, without water, man, animals and plant life cannot survive. Industries
also depend very much on water. In Ghana, where the main source of electricity
is from the Akosombo Dam, water becomes an indispensable commodity. It
is the lifeblood of the economy.
Our forefathers depended on streams
and rivers as their source of water for drinking, farming and for other
purposes. Unfortunately, the activities of man have had negative impact
on our water sources such as the rivers, lakes, dams and streams. Such
activities as indiscriminate cutting down of trees, results in deforestation
that causes the rainfall pattern to change. Erosion, which causes silting
of our water bodies also stems from the activities of man. Industrialization
has impacted negatively on our water sources. Industrial waste such as
cyanide spills into our waters. Insecticides and other chemicals have found
their way into our water bodies, thereby polluting our rivers, rendering
them unsafe for drinking and killing plant life in the rivers. Man
in his bid to find shelter for himself has built on waterways causing problems
for our water sources.
Some of our rivers,
streams have dwindled in size, some have dried up whilst others have become
highly polluted causing health hazards for those whose sources of water
are the streams and rivers. In Ghana, many people do not have access to
treated water (potable water) and as a consequence of using untreated water,
water- borne diseases such as cholera, typhoid and onchocerciasis are prevalent
among such communities. This project therefore aims at creating awareness
among all and sundry especially, the students on the need to manage our
water sources and the need to conserve water, for, after all, Water is
Life.
