WATER - BORNE DISEASES 


Introduction

This lesson will involve the writing of articles on the causes and effects of water-borne diseasesand the effects on the economy by searching for information from the internet. Before the lesson, the student should have an idea of what water-borne diseases are. The lesson will be relevant to the project if students become aware of the causes and effects of water-borne diseases.and the effects ont he economy this will help in curbing the problem. In addition to this , the students will be able to gain skills in writing good and interesting articles, how to search for information from the Internet, how to present their work by using PowerPoint. Hence they will be gaining from the subject area and the use of technology in learning. 
Subject and Grade level:SSS two 

Lesson Goals

  • To search the Internet for information on water-borne diseases. 
  • To acquire presentation skills. 
  • To develop writing skills. 
  • Toa ppreciate the fact that water-borne diseasesaffect the economy. 
Content Objectives
  • Students will be able to identify the causes of water-borne diseases.

Performance Objectives
  • Searching Internet for relevant information on water-borne diseases 
  • Drafting articles on water-borne diseases. 
  • Writing articles on water-borne diseases. 
  • Presenting work in PowerPoint.

  • To learn how to search for materials on the Internet. 
  • To learn presentation techniques with PowerPoint 
  • To gain knowledge in the use of Microsoft word 
Instructional Activities (teacher component) 


teacher books the computer lab in advance for students' use. She groups students into manageable groups and direct students as to how to search for exact information using the right key words or phrases for search. Search engines like www.google.com and www.yahoo.com will be introduced to students to use for search. She helps students to download material from the Internet and save gatheres information into floppies for usage offline. Teacher helps students to write outlines and subsequent articles on water-borne diseases and thier effects on the economy After this, teacher introducesstudents to PowerPoint and help them to present their work in PowerPoint. 

Learning Activities (student component) 
Students search for information on water-borne diseases using the Internet. They gather information, save information on floppies, design outlines and write articles on water-borne diseases and their effects on the economy. They also present the outline of their articles in PowerPoint. 

Instructional Strategies
The lesson takes 90 minutes.teacher uses10 minutes to introduceand explain lesson to them. Theteacher dividesaclass of 32 into 4 main groups ( A, B, C, and D). . Teacher ensures that the necessary information is downloaded from the Internet. She sees to it that students follow instructions to the letter and all students participate in the project by contributing their quota. 

Project Assessment
To wind up the lesson, each group (A,B,C and D) present their work for others to see through PowerPoint presentation. Their presentations assessefor good and clear presentation. Groups will then comment on colleagues' group work. 

Project Materials and Handouts
Dictionaries and Handouts on instructions on the steps of the lesson will be provided for the students' use. Copies will be saved on the available computers in a special folder created purposely for this project.
