World Links Curriculum and Technology Integration E-Learning Projects AIDS! THE DEADLY KILLER Subject: INTEGRATED SCIENCE, ENGLISH LANGUAGE, MATHEMATICS Grade Level: SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL (1- 3) Introduction: We are in the midst of a sexual revolution and have the freedom to engage in varied sexual practices. With freedom comes a responsibility to be familiar with the biology of health-related issues, concerned with sexually transmitted diseases such as AIDS, not only for us but also for our potential offspring. AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) can be explained to be a condition that is preceded by a HIV (Human immunodeficiency virus) infection, which attacks the human immune system leading to a greater susceptibility to certain opportunistic infections. The lesson will thus seek to enable students to explore the effects that sexual behaviour, drug use and the use of safe sex have on the probability of contracting the deadly AIDS virus. PROJECT GOALS: ¨Students should be able to know what AIDS is ¨Students should be able to know the mode of transmission ¨Students should be able to know the symptoms and treatment ¨Students should be able to analyse the effects of AIDS ¨Students should be able to know how to prevent the disease Participants: CLIFFORD ADDO-DIABENE Clifford is a teacher at TechnologySecondary School, Centre of Civilization, in the heart of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, Ghana.He currently holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Science Education.
