AIDS! THE DEADLY KILLER!

Introduction

We are in the midst of a sexual revolution and have the freedom to engage in varied sexual practices. With freedom comes a responsibility to be familiar with the biology of health-related issues, concerned with sexually transmitted diseases such as AIDS, not only for us but also for our potential offspring. AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) can be explained to be a condition that is preceded by a HIV (Human immunodeficiency virus) infection, which attacks the human immune system leading to a greater susceptibility to certain opportunistic infections. The lesson will thus seek to enable students to explore the effects that sexual behaviour, drug use and the use of safe sex have on the probability of contracting the deadly AIDS virus.

Subject and Grade level: INTEGRATED SCIENCE   SSS(1- 3)

Lesson Goals

  • To use search engines to look for information on AIDS from the Internet.
  • To acquire the basic skills in using technology to present work
  • To appreciate the fact that aids is a worldwide epidemic and has become a modern-day plague
  • To appriatiate the fact that sexual behaviours and drug –related activities are the major means by which aids is transmitted
Content Objectives

  • To be able to describe at least two modes of transmission
  • To be able to enumerate at least three symptoms of AIDS
  • To be able to outline some effects of AIDS
  • To be able to explain at least three ways of preventing transmission

Performance Objectives

  • Write down summaries given to them by their teacher
  • Write down website resources given to them by their teacher
  • Search for relevant information on AIDS using the given website resources
  • Discuss their findings from the internet in class

Technology Objectives

  • To use search engines and other directories to surf for information on the internet
  • To identify relevant information from the internet
  • To print out materials or information from website
  • To gain knowledge in the use of Microsoft Word to write out their report or article

Instructional Activities (teacher component)

First of all, teacher books the computer laboratory in advance for student’s use. The teacher uses the first fifteen minutes to introduce the lesson and ask students to write down lesson summaries into their notebooks. Teacher then puts the students into groups of five and gives the necessary instructions to students with regards to the use of the computers, group arrangements and how to search for exact information using search engines such as Yahoo, Goggle, excite, Altavista, etc.
The teacher plays the supervisory role and guide students to download information from the Internet onto floppy diskettes to serve as lesson supplements and also for offline usage in their expository essays and reports. The teacher also gives out research questions on AIDS to students to answer as they browse through the Internet.

Teacher puts students into groups of five
Students move to the laboratory to use computers
Students search for additional information from website given to them
In all 30 minutes was used for the activities.

Project Assessment
The teacher prints out each group’s hundred research questions and mark them. Students knowledge will be tested after the project with a follow up quiz made up of multiple-choice questions to ensure how far the lesson objectives have been achieved.

Project Materials and Handouts
Instructional guidelines on the lesson will be provided step wisely for students use. Research questions and relevant websites will be given out to students as reference to identify the relevant information with regards to the lesson.
