AIDS! THE DEADLY KILLER!


Introduction

The lesson was aimed at creating public awareness on how dangerous the AIDS disease is. It also aimed at integrating technology into the teaching of the lesson. 
Subject and Grade level:SSS 2 AND 3

Lesson Goals

  • To acquire the basic skills in using technology to present work 
  • To appreciate the fact that aids is a worldwide epidemic and has become a modern-day plague.


To appropriate the fact that sexual behaviours and drug –related activities are the major means by which aids is transmitted

Content Objectives 
 

·By the end of the lesson, students must be able to:

·1.        Analyse facts about how AIDS is acquired

·2.        Know which group of people gets AIDS 

·3.        Know the number of people living with HIV/AIDS in Ghana

·4.        Know how to detect the disease

·5.         Know how the disease is treated

·6.        Know how the disease is prevented or not spread
 

Performance Objectives

1.  Students use the internet to browse for information on AIDS 

   2. Students to use their creative skills in creating    public awareness  campaign 
        through articles, bulletins, handouts and   newsletters
.
   3. Children discuss HIV/AIDS issues in their various groups 
 
 

·Technology Objectives

·MS Word for typing out various campaigns to enhance their typing skills

·Printers for printing out information Internet to enhance students’ skills in browsing for information
 

Instructional Activities

  •    Teacher shares the following facts with students
  •    the difference between HIV and AIDS
  •    the history of AIDS in Ghana
  •   those who are at risk i.e. the youth, homosexuals, men, women and pregnant women 
  • Revise the various ways by which HIV is transmitted with children
  • Discuss ways of preventing and spreading AIDS
  • Write the list of some of the groups of people who are at risk for AIDS e.g. Homosexuals, men, women, youth and pregnant women.
  • Put students into groups of five and ask each group to choose one of the groups of people at risk for AIDS and learn more about it from the internet.
  • Let each group create a public awareness campaign for the group of peopleThey have chosen using Microsoft word e.g. needle exchange programmeFor the clinics and hospitals, public services announcement for the youth,Articles in the school magazines for the students themselves, essays to be Read in the churches.
  • Let students use printers to print work.
  • Let group present their campaigns to class explaining why they chose aparticular approach for their audience.


Learning Activities (student component) 

Students put themselves into groups of sixEach group creates a public awareness campaign for the group of people they have chosen using Microsoft word. E.g. needle exchange programmes for the clinics and hospitals (for pregnant women, men and women)Articles in school magazines for the students themselves.Public services announcement for the youth.Essays to be read in churches.Use printers to print out articles, announcements and essaysGroup present their campaign to class explaining why they chose a particular approach for their audience.

Instructional Strategies

1.         Students discuss what they know about HIV/AIDS e.g. mode of transmission, what is AIDS? Etc
2.         Students share what they know about contracting HIV the virus that causes AIDS

The students were provide with handout and leaflets on AIDS as well as CD roms and diskettes for thier use.
