German History, Part 1

58BC - Julius Ceasar conqures Helvetia- known today as Switzerland.

9 AD - Battle of Teutoburg Forest, in which Hermann Arminius leads the Germans in a decisive defeat of Roman forces.

15 - Rome controls Austria south of the Danube.

166 - Northern tribes begin invasion of Austria

486 - The Frankish cheiftain Clovis (Louis I) overruns the province of Gaul, introduces features Roman life in western Germany.

843 - The treaty of Verdun divides the empire of Charlemange into three parts. The German portion is given to Louis the Pious, but soon divided into five duchies.

962 - Otto I dispute crowned Holy Roman Emperor at Aachen.

1075 - A dispute between the papacy and Henry IV marks the beginning of a long strife between the Church and the German State.

1278 - Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf I of the Habsburg dynasty begins acquiring Austrian lands.

1291 - The Swiss cantons of Schwyz, Uri, and Unterwalden enter into the  Perpetual Covenant to defend each other from foreign attack, laying the foundation of the Swiss Confederation.

1300s - The Hanseatic League is the greatest power in northern Germany.

1438 - The Habsburg Archduke of Austria is made Holy Roman Emperor. The family retains the title almost continuously until 1806.

1515 - France's halting of Swiss expansion into Italy precipitates the Swiss policy of neutrality.

1517 - Beginning of the Reformation.

1555 - The Peace of Augsburg allows German princes to choose Catholicism or Protestantism.

1648 - The Peace of Westphalia ends the Thirty Year's War and recognizes Swiss independence.

1683 - Invading Ottomans stopped short of Vienna for the second and final time.

1713 - Holy Emperor ( by now almost solely an Austrian power) Charles VI declares the Pragmatic Sanction, by which his daugther Maria Theresa becomes his her.

1719 - The house of Lichtenstein combines the countries of Vaduz and Schellenberg, forming a country the name for themselves.

1740 - Frederick the Great becomes king of Prussia and turns it into a major power.

1798 - French forces occupy Switzerland and set up the Helvetic Republic.
