| German History, Part 2 1806 - Napoleon's invasions form the Confederation of the Rhine and destroys the remenants of the Holy Roman Empire. Francis II, the former Emperor, renounces the title in favor of a new one: Emperor of Austria. 1815 - At the Congress of Vienna, the German Confederation is formed. Prince Klemens von Metternich, who dominates Austrian politics until 1848, represents his country at Vienna. The Swiss Confederation is reestablished and its territory expanded. 1848 - Revolutions sweep Germany; first national assembly meets in Frankfurt in hopes of producing a more unified country. New Swiss constitution broadens the powers of the federal government. 1863 - The International Red Cross is founded in Geneva, Switzerland. 1866 - Austria defeated by a combined Italian-Prussian force and is made the dual monarchy of Austria-Hungary. 1871 - Otto von Bismark founds the German Empire. 1914 -Assassination of Archducke Ferdinand triggers World War I. 1918 - 1919 - Germany is broken by the Treaty of Versailles; the Weimar Republic founded. Austria's Emperor is overthrown an dthe country becomes a republic. 1920 - The League of Nation established in geneva, Switzerland. 1933 - The Nazi party takes power in Germany. 1938 - Austria is conquered by the Nazis. 1939 - Invasion of Poland; beginning of World War II. 1945 - End of World war II; Nuremberg trials; Germany divided between the allies. 1955 - Austria regains independence, declares a policy of neutrality. 1959 - Switzerland becomes a founding member of the European Free Trade Association. 1961 - Berlin Wall built. Divides East-Germany and West Germany. 1976 - Winter Olympic Games held at Innsbruck Austria. 1989 - Berlin Wall taken down; communist rule in East Germany collapes; reunification of Germany. |
