The learning area

The students involved in the Grouputer - planning for Shakespeare project consisted of 46 year 9 English students. The students were involved in putting on a theatrical performance of a Shakespearean play for parents and school. This unit involved planning and development of the play. Students were divided into groups reflecting their roles in the production of the performance, i.e scriptwriters, actors, publicity, set designers. Students came from mixed abilities from ESL students and hearing impaired to academically gifted and talented. "Belconnen High school caters for all years, ability levels and a range of preferred learning styles" (Crook, 1996). This unit was called Cooperative English Computer Connection.

This case study provides an example of the use of ICT within a school with the focus on a key learning area, English. This use of ICT is innovative as it provides an example of how the computer becomes a tool, which students utilise to engage with knowledge and develop group processes. Used in this way ICT becomes a tool for extending and applying concepts and opinions with less focus on students technical ability.
