| With the permission of the Departmental Chairperson, Dr. Wyatt Kirk, Dr. Patricia Bethea surveyed students in the Spring of 1989 about their possible interest in participating in a Departmental organization for students. Such an organization would serve as a vehicle for special programming and networking relative to the field of counseling. Students responded favorably to the survey, expressing interest in an organization. The first meeting of students, for the purpose of establishing a counseling organization, was held on December 2, 1989. Dr. Patricia Bethea and Dr. Aurelia Mazyck organized a meeting organized a meeting composed of students who attended Saturday classes. It was decided at that meeting that the organization would serve many purposes: social, mentoring, student support, and programming. Donna Handy and Linda Kelly agreed to serve as co-chairpersons of the organization that would later be called North Carolina A&T State University Association of Counseling and Development. Kim Wagoner was selected to temporarily perform the duties of Secretary; and a Constitutional Committee was formed. These Constitutional Committee members included Donna Handy, Linda Kelly, Jacqueline Esule, Venetia Fisher, and Phyllis Johnson. On April 28, 1990, the fist annual organizational picnic was held at the Greensboro Natural Science Center; and the constitution was ratified. Subsequently, the organization submitted the necessary forms to be a recognized organization on campus. In 1992, the constitution was amended and the organizational name was changed to Graduate Counseling Association, in order to keep up with the change in the name of the national organization. The Graduate Counseling Association has proved a valuable vehicle for the advancement of counseling at NC A&T SU. |
