Episode 38: Self Possessed
Guest Review By: Marie

Introducing: Really Crappy Band

The Gist of It: Scott and Rogue are playing racquetball somewhere inside the X-Mansion, (Gee, if they made one of those, I wonder if Rogue and Kitty will get their own rooms, but I doubt itI really hope Jean gets a new car! Because she really deserves it. -.-) and Rogue wins. As she helps him up, she asks him for a rematch, but he declines, saying he was going to the concert that night. Rogue then asked him if he was going with anyone, but of course, he was. Can anyone guess with who? Rogue gave it up, this boy sure is dense, he certainly doesnt notice any of her attempts, so she goes back into the racquetball room after he leaves and starts to play by herself. We then shift to a view of a limousine drive through some less than well kept streets. It lowered its window and a cat that was sitting on a step jumped through and landed on the seat inside. It then metamorphed into Mystique. She asked Irene what was so important for her to contact Mystique. Irene then said that it was about Rogue, and that she was in danger. Evidently Rogue has an important role in Mystique and Destinys future, though, as Irene said: She may not live long enough to fulfill it. (Dun dun dunnn!) Cut to Rogue hitting the ball way too hard with a quick flashback of Freddy and then her groaning and throwing the racket just as hard at the wall, where both became embedded in. (Cmon Rogue, you guys just finished fixing up the place, stop ruining it!) Then the intro comes.

After the commercials, Wolverine is standing in front of Rogues door. He is just about to knock when Rogue opens her door. She asked him if something was the matter, and he held up her racket which she had ruined the wall with. Just as she was stalling for an answer Kitty comes up and pulls her off to get a ride in Jeans new car. And so we see Miss Wonderful polishing her lovely car up. (To be honestI was kind of hoping that in this episode her car would be dented or something, practically everything is handed to Jean on a silver platter. And dont try to sway me with that episode when her powers advanced, because I honestly didnt feel that bad for her) So theyre in the car and Kitty discovers that Jean and Scott are going to the concert that night, together. Kurt teleports in and joins Kitty in joyful exultation that the two are going out. Rogue must have had a headache or was just sick of hearing about the budding couple and asked them to can it.

Scene change, were now in the school. Rogue was about to go into the restroom, but a suddenly we see a flash of when she absorbed some of Kittys powers. Phasing through the door she stumbled in and was greeted by Risty. Risty explains her prolonged absence was due to the fact she had been shuttled off to England and couldnt get back until recently due to the strange things that were happening in Bayville. She apologizes for not being there for Rogue, to which she responded that she wasnt being a real friend for hiding who she really was. As Rogue bent over to drink some water, we see another flashback, this time of her absorbing Storm. The water fountain sparks with electricity and Rogue, who was really freaked out, ran off. When Risty catches up to her outside, Rogue explains her powers to which Risty very comfortingly tells her to go party at the concert.

The scene then changes to a large concert hall where you see a really crappy band playing and many of the X-People scattered in the crowd. Jamie, that little irrepressible twelve year old had somehow gotten Kitty to go with him. And he was wearing a tuxedo that was loaned from Roberto and instructed to give the benefactor all the details. Kitty agreed to have a corsage put on her wrist and they then went into the crowd. Jean then teases Kitty as she passes them with Jamie in tow. Scott asks what that was all about and then we get a long and may I say boring moment of the two of them evaluating their relationship. (Are we going out, or not? Nobut yes. Alright alright, shut up!) Then we see Rogue, who just happens to look at them. Then there was a flashback of Jean holding Scott, and she grimaced. Risty asked her if she still had a thing for Scott, to which Rogue hastily declines. Risty says that the two of them deserve each other and pulled Rogue even closer to the stage. Rogues powers were really acting up now, and she told Risty she wanted to leave. Risty tells her itll be alright, and then, wouldnt you know it! For the sake of the show to wrap up this plot, a girl falls off a guys shoulder and rips her sleeve off. Rogue stumbles around and absorbs a bunch of the people around her before absorbing Risty. Then we cut to a commercial.

When we come back, Rogue is still absorbing Risty, who turns back into Mystique and falls to the ground. Rogue then transforms into her friend and runs away from Mystique. Falling to the floor herself, Sabretooth takes over her mind and she morphs into him and he goes on a rampage. The X-Men then quickly attack Sabretooth and save a bunch of the people there. (Im still amazed at the wireless speakers) Eventually Sabretooth is knocked under a bunch of debris, and then Juggernaut takes over. He throws the stuff off of him, and Nightcrawler (Who was standing atop the pile) as well. He exits the arena and Mystique follows. Scott then orders a regroup at the mansion. Poor little Jamie who was absorbed by Rogue while trying to stop Sabretooth is carried off by Kitty, and ever the gentleman, asks her if she is enjoying herself.

Cut to Juggernaut hiding from the cops in an alley. After a squad car passes, he steps out. But wouldnt you know it; another squad car was following him. Cains rental on the dominant person in Rogues mind was up, and now Magneto took over. (This was one of my favorite part just because I like Magnetos theme in the show) He used his magnetic powers to push the squad car away, but then Pietro takes over in Rogues head. He runs off, but another police car was headed for them and he transformed into Arcade. Walking by without struggle, he then transforms back into Rogue and she sat down in another alley, and cried. Cut to another commercial.

We see Rogue still in the alleyway who was still crying. Mystique then shows up, to which the enraged Rogue turns into Raven herself. She accuses Mystique of using her to spy on the X-Men, to which she replies that it wasnt that simple. She then tries to make Rogue see that she truly does love her, and that she is Mystiques adopted daughter. Rogue runs off as Mystique tells her to search her memories. Rogue then teleports on top of a roof and curls up in a ball. But since Evolution is only a half an hour long, she doesnt stay there long. She hears a motorcycle and Sabretooth takes her over again, to discover that it was Wolverine who was close. Diving down from the top of the building, Sabretooth planned it so he would land right on top of Wolverine. Logan makes the first attack, but when he smelled the air he realized that Sabretooth was not fighting him. Creed demands that Logan should fight him, but then the rest of the X-Men show up. Cyclops punches Rogue through the wall of a warehouse with his optic blasts, and tells the others to come to their location. Logan stops Cyclops from going in there to finish Sabretooth off (Like the good little X-Man would kill anyone) and tells him its Rogue. The two of them go in while Berzerker, Sunspot, Nightcrawler and Magma hang back. Entering they call out for Rogue to come over and that they want to help. She transforms into Cyclops and gives him a taste of his own medicine. Logan helps him up and Cyclops tells him that It hurts more than I thought (Poor guy). Rogue shows herself and asks them to help her. They assure her that they will, and that theyre her friends. Rogue has a sudden flashback of Risty, and in typical teen angst (Though Ill give it to her since she is a little messed up in the head) tells them that she has no friends and turns into Storm. Logan and Scott are thrown out of the building while Rogue blows the roof off the warehouse. Jean asks them whats wrong with her, and Scott explains that its like everyone she has ever absorbed is fighting for control inside of her. Scott tells Jean to try and bring Rogue down to the ground, but Rogue retaliates with Jeans own powers and sends pushes her back and away. The Blackbird comes flying in from behind Rogueand for some reason theyre flying so that theyll end up hitting her. (Youd think they would have seen her way off before and change their trajectory so they wouldnt kill her) But fortunately Rogue uses Magnetos powers and pushes the Blackbird aside. Through excellent steering, Beast is able to pull the Blackbird out of its barrel roll and land with only a couple million of dollars worth of damage out on the street. (All the while, Im wondering why the cops havent figured out that the problem is over there, but Ill chalk it up to their intelligence to stay away) Storm then goes out and confronts Rogue, but is electrocuted and falls to the ground. Jean, who has to save at least five someones and a major character in every episode, catches Storm and brings her down safely. Wolverine tells them to fall back and that he can take a beating better than they can, confronts Rogue alone. She starts kicking him around, but he continues to talk to her, empathizing and saying that she can beat this and to not let them push her around. When he says this, she stops fighting him and falls to the ground saying there are too many of them. Professor X comes in and helps her excise all the people in her mind, and we get a sweeping camera view of her turning into the people she absorbed before changing back to herself and passing out. Logan held her in his arms and asked the Professor is shell be alright. When he doesnt answer right away Logan gets a little antsy to which Xavier then replies that he isnt too sure. As the group walks back to their vehicles, Mystique watches them.

Scene change to the infirmary at the mansion. Professor X is outside of the room, watching on the inside where Wolverine sat by Rogues bedside. Scott comes up and asks him how long Wolverine has sat there, to learn that he never left her side. He then asked if Rogue will be alright and the Professor says shell recover but shes a little weak at them moment from the strain. But the hardest thing will be that shell have to overcome the fact of who her mother and Risty really are. We cut then to Wolverine who gives Rogue a rather touching speech about how betrayal sticks with you, and how she has friends who do care and will be there for her and places a hand over hers. Waking up, she gives it a little squeeze and waking up, smiles up at him with tears in her eyes. Wolverine smiles and it seems that somehow they got two peoples characters built in this episode.

The scene changes one last time. Mystique and Irene are in the same limo and stopped in front of the mansion. Mystique asks Irene if Rogue is back in their lives again, to which Destiny says she is, but a darkness has now fallen over Mystique and Rogue. She tells her that an ancient mutant (Three guesses on who!) will once again walk the earth and that their fates are in his hands. (Now theres unsubtle foreshadowing if I ever heard it!)

My Opinion: (As if you haven't had enough of it): It was a good episode. I really could have done without the crappy band that symbolized all 'rock music' because you could barely hear the words over pathetic cords. Further, I don't really like Apocalypse, but looking at this logically, we see that two of the Acolytes are most likely going to end up as X-Men, (Because I doubt all the Gambit and Colossus fans will let the writers keep them as baddies) and they can't always be fighting the Brotherhood. Arcade was a one-shot villain (I really don't think he'll be back), the witch doctor is another one timer, and they can't always be fighting human people. There are the Sentinels, but that's just not enough. What I'd like to see is Mr. Sinister, but then again, he'll probably focus his attention on Jean and Scott, and I really can't take that all the time. So all in all, on a scale of one to ten, I give this episode a nine.
