Episode 36: X-Treme Measures
Guest Review By: Joe

Introducing: Some Morlocks

The Gist of It: The episode opens with a group of freaky looking people climbing out of the sewers, Caliban tells them "through here". One rubs the wall creating a hole. The enter a room that has a bunch of high tech gear, and some boxes of Power-8. They start vandalizing, throwing things off the conveyer belts and hitting the electronic equipment until a guard interrupts them with a flashlight to their face, a little girl comes up behind and touches his skin, paralizing him.

In the company headquarters the executive is walking through a room talking to one of his employees, he asks what the damage this time was and the other guy replies they'll be shut down for the day. The employee asks if he wants to call the police, the executive declines saying they don't need the bad press one week before powerade hits the market. Then orders the employee to beef up security.

A few kids in the hall rip a skateboarder picture off the Powerade poster. Scott cautiously walks outside his classroom looking left and right. He walks out and sees Kitty in the hall. He decides to run for it and starts quickly walking in the opposite direction and bumps into Jean and warns her that Kitty is coming. They both run off leaving behind a confused Kitty. Spyke goes to his locker opening it, the skateboarder picture they ripped off pops out scaring him back, it was altered with spikes in it. Everyone in the hall laughs at him. The idiot we saw in "Mainstream" comes over and helps him up telling everyone very funny in a sarcastic voice.

Kitty walks across the street and spots Scott's car, with no one in it. She shrugs and continues. As she goes off Scott gets up and tells Jean the coast is clear, Kurt pops up and tells them Kitty got her license. "We know" they said in sync, Scott starts up the car and Kurt warns them Kitty is looking for a licensed 18 year old to drive them. They start driving off and Kitty spots them, chases the car a little but they just drive faster to avoid her. Kitty then spots Rogue and asks when she's turning 18.

The idiot is chasing Spyke along the sidewalk while Spyke is on his skateboard. Spyke tells the kid most people don't want anything to do with them, and the kid says something about how cool it would be to have powers and they continue. A group of tall guys are blocking the sidewalk and the idiot goes up, asks if they remember him, call one kid (I think) a "baghead" and says that he has a mutant to help fight now. This pisses Spyke off and he starts to walk off, but is interrupted by the tall guys. The tall guys start pushing him around which makes him bring his spikes out and scare them a little, then throws one in a dumpster. He then brings out a big spike and trips one of them and jump kicks the other. Kurt runs him behind a building and teleports them away.

In the Library of the institute, Professor X is telling Scott and Jean he has an important assignment that may be dangerous, Wolverine comes in and volunteers, Scott and Jean tell him to take it. Professor X hands Wolvie a key. Kitty is in the front seat of the X-Van and drive-phases through the front gate, then keeps going.

Evan is walking through the halls and encounters Ororo, she says "Evan?" and he walks past her saying not now. He goes into his room and looks at himself in the mirror, seeing all the spikes that are there. He has trouble retracting them but eventually does it. He takes his shirt off and looks at his back which has spikes all the way down, and asks himself "what's happening to me?"

The X-Van which now has a bunch of road signs sticking out of it arrives back at the institute. An excited Kitty gets out enthusiastically and asks him when lesson #2 is. Logan walks into the institute and hands Professor X the key of the X-Van. He sarcastically thanks Jean and Scott, saying he owes them. "I owe you too, Chuck".

Scott and Jean hear Kitty talking asking if anyone has seen them, Jean says "sorry but I can't let her find me" and uses telekinesis to float Scott into the room to Kitty.

In the kitchen Spyke quickly drinks 2 glasses of milk and starts pouring a third, Beserker asks if he can have any. When Spyke is passing it he noticed his hand has spikes on them. Beserker mentions the skating contest and tells Evan he thinks it's about to start.

At the competition an announcer is doing the usually announcments and it shows a girl under the bleachers. A couple of new recruits and Kurt are cheering Evan in the stands. The competition starts and a few guys do some tricks, then Evan does a couple that defy all laws of physics. He walks past a couple of guys with attitude. All of the competitors are drinking powerade and the woman we saw onder the bleachers walks by and knocks the drink out of Evans hand, then says "don't".

Back to the competition, a few guys fall and Evan does more tricks. One guy falls and busts his balls on the grinding rail . The announcer is announcing all of Spyke's moves in an impressive voice. Ororo is impressed that she knew he was good, but not that good. Spyke finishes his run and encounters another competitor at the top of the ramp. The competitor tells him to disqualify himself which starts up a big argument. An official goes up and confronts them asking what's happening, the competitor tells the official that Spyke is a mutant. Evan explains his powers have nothing to do with his skating abilities, but the official says he has to discuss it with the judges. Evan says he'll know how this will turn out and in anger just leaves the competition, grabbing a powerade on the way out. He starts to drink it which makes him sick and blurs his sight. Spikes start to penetrate his skin and then fire, knocking over the scoreboard. When it's about to hit everyone in the bleachers Storm uses wind to keep it up and Bobby freezes the bottom of it. A child falls off the bleachers but is saved by Kurt while Storm is calling out for Evan. Beserker notices and recognizes the woman running towards Evan.

As Spyke approaches the ampitheatre, he falls down from illness. A freaky little girl approaches him trying to touch him, he walks away but a guy walks through the back of the ampitheatre and holds Evan in place for her to touch.

Kitty drives up to the institute very fast with Scott in the passanger seat. She runs up and asks Kurt if Evan is okay, Kurt teleports her off to find him. Scott is in the passenger seat of his car out of breath and seriously frightened. He says to himself "I'll never ride in another vehicle again".

In the laboratory of the Institute, Hank is looking at some cells under a microscope and the Professor is adding some chemicals to each other which makes him come to the conclusion that Powerade is harmful to mutants, even on skin contact but harmless to normal humans (well duh ). Storm comes in a panic, asking if he's poisoned. She says they have to find him.

In an underground area with tents and all Spyke is resting up, one of hte morlocks pours something into his mouth. The Morlocks explain what's going on and tell him he has to rest. One of the Morlocks says his appearance is mutating. One says they can use him, Caliban says they can't trust him yet. Spyke comes up and asks what they're doing down there. They say the world is not a nice place for mutants and show him an area of the sewers where powerade is being dumped. Spyke tells them he wants to help their cause. Caliban sees Beserker and the woman we saw under the bleachers yells out she can see in the dark and he can't sneak up on her. The freaky little girl then comes up and Paralizes him.

One of the Morlocks burn a hole in the wall of the Powerade HQ, everyone enters. Spyke knocks a security camera out with a barrage of spikes, the executive notices the security officer is paralized and gasps. They pour some powder into the containers that's supposed to destroy the drink.

Back where Beserker was paralized, he starts to regain movement when a group of morlocks approach him. The front one turns into a dinosaur type beast and chases him off, he escapes through the sewer hole. Ray calls the professor and says he knows where Evan is.

Back at the Powerade HQ, the executive busts in to find the mutants and orders a couple of security guards to fire. They shoot some electric gun things that knock the freaky looking girl off the top of one of the machines, but unfortunately Spyke catches her. The other one hit a power breaker causing an explosion and knocking over one of the powerade containers, spilling the liquid out. The Morlocks all start running and the lead girl tells them to get into the drain. As they run the liquid is close behind them, but they come to a dead end. Spyke makes a ladder using spikes and everyone climbes up, he goes up last and the girl has to actually save him from falling. At that moment Scott blasts through the ground opening a hole for them. Jean telekinetically lifts them all one by one while holding the liquid off. Storm is watering it down and Jean tells Evan she's diluding it.

Outside Spyke spots the Morlocks and walks off with them, Storm can't find him and asks for them to help find him. Scott tells her that they'll find him.

Professor X is talking to the executive of Powerade, the executive explains that they didn't know it harmed mutants, and if they did they would have stopped production immediately, and they will do so now. The Professor believes him and goes off.

Everyone is looking for Spyke in the sewers until Storm spots him, she's the only one there. The spikes penetrating his skin have disfigured him, spikes are running up and down his arms shoulders and spine. He tells her that things have gotten too crazy on the surface and he's just going to take a break, and says not to worry about him. He's with friends. Him and the Morlocks walk away as she calls out for him.

Professor X finished the meeting with the executive and tells Logan to drive home, but Kitty replies and tells him Logan said she could drive. She drives off quickly and if you look closely you can see a glimpse of the Professors frightened face out the window.

The network executive is talking to an employee, he tells the employee he wants powerade back in production ASAP. It just became a lot more valuable.
