X-Men: Evolution 3 - Hearing Things

Featuring: Jean, Cyclops, and Toad

The Gist of It: A new mutant (bum bum bummm *ominous thunder clash*) Jean Grey comes to the Institute, unable to control her powers. Sucks to be her. As her parents talk to the Prof, she kinda sits there floating things and reading minds while Scott... goes... "Wow" the whole time. It's love at first sight! Anyway, cut to Bayville High, where a bunch of dudes are playing basketball. Lil Todders tries to join in, but the dudes are all "Huhuhuh, you stink" and run off. And so, Todd tries to impress them with his mad mutant "skillz", but that kinda backfires, because they're all idiot bigots except for the guy who's like "Let's just get along!". Yessss.... So, Todd spits on LeadBigot and hops off.

Back at the... uh... high school... again... Jean's walking around with millions of other people's thoughts going through her head. Scott tries to help her out, but the thoughts are too overwhelming, soooo Jean just runs off crying while Scott's just... confused. You can tell by his eyebrows...

Anywho, Jean runs back to the Institute, where Ororo gives her a pep talk, and Professor X helps her learn how to... predict the card he's holding up. Exciting! And so, Scott runs into the room and tells Jean about a field trip her English class is taking.

So, next day, the whole class (which includes Todd, Jean, and Scott, which I don't get. I mean, yes, Scott had permission from the Prof to go with Jean's class, but what about Todd? How can a Freshman be in a Junior English class? Then again... Bayville may be veeery different from my school...) boards the bus and it's off to... PlayPlaceDoesn'tHaveAName they go! More exciting! So, Scott and Jean bond, and they're in the middle of... uh... bonding, when some green thing shoots past them.

Yes, Todd shoots his tongue out to take control of his bus, being all "Haha, now they wish they'd been nicer to me!" and... generally pathetic. Sooo pathetic. Scott runs up to the front to save the day, just as Todd spits his green goo in the driver's face, then tries to talk him out of killing everybody or... whatever Todd was planning on doing. The bus swerves towards the edge of a conveniently placed plateau, so Scott saves the day by zapping a pole to break the bus's fall.

Somehow, the bus fell on its side without hurting anybody, and so the kiddies all get out, while Todd's pinned between the bus and the pole. And so, being the kinda people that they are, Scott 'n Jean help him get out and all is well and saved.

And then there's the touching epilogue where Scott, Jean, and the Professor all talk and bring this comic to a conclusion. Thank God.

BH Moments: The basketball scene in the beginning, and then the bus scene at the end. I'm not sure if these are really BH moments, seeing as how the Brotherhood doesn't exist at this point :D

Characterization: Well, I suppose this thing is chock fulla characterization... for Jean and Scott. I don't mind that, actually, since EvoComic!Jean's annoys me a lot less than Jean in the show (mostly because Jean in the show is just perfect, lah de dah, while Jean in the comic has more of a personality), and... Scott's all-around amusing in this. Now, as far as Todd goes, I don't like what characterization he did get. As I said before, he was just plain pathetic. I had absolutely no sympathy for him at all. Now, in the cartoon, when he first appeared, it was love at first sight for me. His attitude, actions, lines, everything was great about him! And he wasn't scary like his comic book counterpart! In this he's just "*sigh* *self pity* *wah* I'm gonna die and take everybody else with me! Then they'll feel sorry for me!!" and... guh.

My Opinion: Didn't like it. Nope. I just... eh. This issue really didn't appeal to me. Todd was so blah, and the whole bus scene was just dumb. But I liked the Jean/Scott scenes! (kill me, I'm starting to enjoy canon pairings >.< Well, at least I still hate Lance/Kitty!) Scott was the saving grace in this issue. Who knew I'd ever say that! Anyway, in comparison to the other issues of the Evo comic, this one's not that good.

Rating (out of 5): 1. I thought it was boring and too "wah, poor me!", which is perfectly fine in itself, I just prefer not reading it >.>

Art Rating (out of 5): I have mixed feelings about Udon being all over Marvel comics. I mean, sure it's decent art, but when I see it, I just think "Oh. Udon. Neat." It's not like with my other comics when I go "AAAH!! Casey Jones!! Kuberts!! Joe Mad! Gods among men!!" There's nothing personal about the art, and I guess it makes me a little weird, soooo uh... yeah. 3?

BH Babble:

: Pay no attention to that kid in the comic! He's not me! He didn't even say "yo", yo!
: Yeah. It's just not Todd without the pseudo-ebonics :D
: Exactly, yo. Werd up and all that.
