CYNTHIA ALEXANDER:
Mystifying Yet Mystified
Several songs on the album go against the stereotype people have of Cynthias music.  Knowing There Is Only Now, for instance, is heavily touted as the next single.

Ang lawak niya, Cynthia says, code-switching temporarily and catching me off-guard.  It is shallow as it is deep.  If radio plays it, Ill be quite happy.

With the exception of NU 107, radio has never truly been quite receptive of Filipino singers, much more artists such as Cynthia, who insists on quality when they release albums.  Flowers of Youth, for instance, is an example of a track that occasionally falls victim to this process of quality control. The words to Flowers of Youth were penned by Cynthias mother, multi-awarded poet Tita Lacambra-Ayala.

I tried to put a melody to my mothers words, and for a while, it seemed like it wouldnt work out, Cynthia explains.  A song has to hit me on a vibratory level.  Ill play it on the keyboard, and if the melody doesnt quite work out, Ill leave it for a while.  If it comes back to me later, then I feel it should be given another shot.  She grins.  I easily scrap things out if they dont meet my standards.  I could churn out work for money, but I wont.

Its easier for us women, she adds.  I can do what I do because I am female.  I dont have to worry too much about supporting the household because Im married.  My husband can do that!  She laughs.  I can devote more time to my craft.  That means quality.

The quality music Cynthia speaks about came to a head at the recently concluded Ateneo de Manila Alternative Class Programs Womens Music Seminar.

I just played, she laughs, I had a lot of fun.

Perhaps its that joie de vie that makes Cynthia Alexander so pleasurable to watch. Live performances are exuberant displays of her genius, her heart bleeding upon her sleeve, her passion and love for her music possessing her body, mind and soul.  She does almost all originals; her covers are well-chosen - Beatles, Indigo Girls, the occasional instrumental.  We are lucky to witness such an ebullient show in our lifetime, such spell-binding brilliance.  I, blushing and goo-goo eyed fan that I am, tell her so.
