CYNTHIA ALEXANDER:
Mystifying Yet Mystified
One ticket would get the buyer in for the whole day.  That meant students, teachers, musicologists and their like could get in and just walk from one workshop to another.  The freedom of being able to jam with other musicians was a feeling that Cynthia hadnt felt in quite a while, and for which she is quite grateful.

All Ive prayed for on the way came along, she says, remarking on her good fortune.  Its like Im a priest.  Its always the music first.

Good fortune

Cynthia Alexander has certainly gone a long way since her decision to enter the record scene years back.  She literally ran away from home in pursuit of her dreams.

I left home for music, she says, a rather pained look crossing her face, and God has fed me, He has not left me alone.

That home was a bastion for music and art, nonetheless.  Cynthia is the daughter of artists and master wordsmiths Jose Ayala, Jr. and Tita Lacambra-Ayala, and sister to brother Joey, who is even better known than she is, having carved out a career of blending native Philippine instruments and rock music to become of the countrys premiere folk singers.

Cynthias many talents were brought to the fore at the Sarawak festival.  Her world-renowned bass-playing skills were certainly showcased (she won the Best Bass Player award at the 1989 World Band Explosion contest in Japan, back when she was bassist for the Hayp).

After the release of 1997s Insomnia and Other Lullabyes, an album that won her the Best New Artist and Best Alternative Music Album plums at the 1998 Katha Music Awards, Cynthia played with other artists, including Mike Hanopol, Jun Lopito and brother Joey.  She has tackled theater (she was Mary Magdalene in the other version of Jesus Christ Superstar).  Shes also tried out other instruments at Sarawak.  Among these instruments was the kulintang, a Philippine indigenous instrument that brother Joey Ayala popularized in his music (and utilized by Lea Salonga in her international single, The Journey).
