| CYNTHIA ALEXANDER: Mystifying Yet Mystified |

| One ticket would get the buyer in for the whole day. That meant students, teachers, musicologists and thIts actually Malou who plays the kulintang, she says, and she did duets with a lot of people there using the kulintang. It was Insomnia that also made her name one to reckon with in the ever-growing field of female singer-songwriters. Comfort In Your Strangeness, a track off that album, is widely acknowledged as one of the best alternative independent ballads ever. Its also an unspoken rule that any UP student of folk music or creative writing is expected to know the song by heart. Rippingyarns: the indie release Cynthias latest album, Rippingyarns, while independently released under n/a records, has been getting favorable airplay and reviews. First single U&I topped the NU 107.5 charts, and album sales have been brisk, a feat even more remarkable given the fact that it is on an independent label. Cynthias never been happier. Im a little tired of U&I, she jokes, but its helped my music reach a wider audience. The sound of Rippingyarns is decidedly different from Insomnia The melodies are more memorable, the lyrics more introspective, the emotions more heartfelt. The sound is a unique combination of guitars, ethnic instruments, harmonies and lilting melodies. Comparisons to other torch folk singers, including Suzanne Vega, Joni Mitchell and Joan Baez are inevitable. One friend of mine made a criminal reference to Alanis Morissette. Cynthia asks me which track of Rippingyarns I prefer most. I love I Dont Mind, I tell her boldly, finally working up the courage to give an opinion, great harmonies, nice message, cool ethnic sound. She nods in appreciation.
