The house is large and the grounds, extensive. Though it's a little past midday, there is a dull sort of look to it all. Your view of anything past the gates is blocked by a thick fog which swirls but does not dissipate. You feel vaguely paranoid about this house, but you shrug it off. You are to live here for one year. You and the few children and even fewer adults with you are here for school -- to teach or to learn.
You enter the building and are greeted by an older woman with gray hair and a kindly expression on her face. She shows you all to your rooms to deposit your things, then guides you to another room, all the while locking and unlocking doors as you enter and leave the rooms through which you travel. You dismiss her strange behavior as you find yourself entering a room lit by two oil lamps and occupied by a family of four: a father, a mother, and two children -- one boy and one girl. Every shutter is drawn; not an ounce of sunlight is to be seen in this room.
You are at the residence of the Apling family.
