NEON RIDER, "WHERE THE BUFFALO ROAM," SEASON 8, EPISODE 5, FIRST AIRED SOMETIME IN 1994
ROLE DESCRIPTION: Gabrielle plays Nicole, a teen who gets stranded in a cabin during a winter storm with a group of people after a long and barely explicable series of events involving a buffalo and a duck. I hasten to point out that I'm not making this up.

At any rate, a search-and-rescue worker shows up (played by none other than
Corner Gas actress Janet Wright) and listens as the group recounts the story of how they all got stranded - with each person telling his or her own selective version of the truth.

SERIES BACKGROUND: It's hard to put a series like this into words. It revolves around a famous writer / therapist Michael Landon wannabe (and reasonable lookalike) who decides to retreat to his ranch just outside of Vancouver and work with troubled youth. Suspense is at a minimum, as is good acting - and in fact, in this episode, the guest actresses really saved the day.

OVERALL IMPRESSIONS: The episode takes quite a few swings at humor and connects on about half of them. While a scant bit of that humor is actually quite funny, if this episode is representative of the series as a whole then I find it amazing that the show lasted five years.

For the first 40 minutes of this 45-minute episode, Gabrielle's character is an utter non-factor. As the episode starts coming to a close, however, Nicole is the most important character of the group, as she slices up a bunch of inaccurate stories and reassembles the pieces into an accurate account of the events that led everyone to the cabin.

KUDOS TO GABRIELLE: It's hard to say that this was one of her more challenging roles, but she was just great as Nicole rattled off correction after correction to the exaggerated stories of the other group members, especially when she shoved the "communication is a two-way street" line so often spoken by the others back down their throats. It turned out to be one of those borderline sappy endings that could have bombed, but it came off pretty nicely thanks to her work, especially in the flashbacks.

KUDOS TO JANET WRIGHT: She's almost indistinguishable from her
Corner Gas character of Emma Leroy, and her football-obsessed Michelle Pfeiffer (no relation) character was brilliantly Emma-ish (Emma-esque?) in her position as a virtual referee while listening to the group's stories. Particularly funny was her shot at former Buffalo Bills quarterback Jim Kelly and his Super Bowl woes against the Dallas Cowboys.

APPEARING HERE AND ELSEWHERE WITH GABRIELLE:

Stephen E. Miller, who plays Henrick, played Mr. Anderson in Due East, an Army officer in Outer Limits episode "Glitch," Magnum Potter in Floating Away, and a bartender in Inspectors 2: A Shred of Evidence. Janet Wright, of course, has appeared in every episode of Corner Gas with Gabrielle.
