PREVIEWS: Dinosaur Planet

As the N64 comes to the end of its life, it looks as if Rare has just about squeezed every bit of its power into this masterpiece. Coming on a massive 526mb cartridge (consider Zelda was only 256) and using the Expansion Pak, this has the potential to be the greatest game Rare has ever made.

There are two playable characters, Sabre and Krystal, ensuring two different quests. Your journey takes you to the visually stunning land of Dinosaur Planet, with landscapes that stretch into the distance as far as the eye can see, without a hint of fogging. Real time shadows, beautiful lighting effects, and stunning waterfalls, all shown in both night and day and in different weather conditions. It looks amazing.

There are over fifty different characters to interact with, each using real speech rather than streams of dialog to read. I can't begin to imagine how good that will sound with the music amazing music all using Dolby Surround Sound, which (will be included). Amongst these characters are some cute little sidekicks, which you can ask to give messages, send into battle, dig holes or just gain useful advice from. It sounds great.

As well as the stunning fight sequences, there are loads of subquests and subgames, the one that stands out for me, though, has to be the race down a snowy mountainside on a turbo charged slay.

Two huge quests, highly impressive graphics, voice acting, and a complex story, roll on Christmas....
