  • Sun Microsystems announces development of the Java programming language
  • Netscape agrees to include a copy of Sun's Java runtime environment with every copy of Navigator
  • Bill Gates sends "Internet Tidal Wave" email to Microsoft executives concerning competitve threat from Netscape
  • Microsoft sends executives to Intel concerning the encroachment of Intel's Native Signal Processing (NSP) software on Microsoft's platform
  • Microsoft calls off merger with Intuit amidst DOJ antitrust concerns
June, 1995
  • Intel completes beta version of its NSP software for Windows 95
  • IBM acquires Lotus Development Corporation
June 2, 1995
Microsoft meets with Netscape concerning Windows 95 version of Navigator browser
June 21, 1995
Microsoft executives travel to Netscape to discuss role of Navigator on Windows 95
July, 1995
  • Senior Microsoft executive Daniel Rosen is instructed by his superiors to drop the effort to reach a strategic concord with Netscape.
  • Bill Gates meets with Intel's Andy Grove to discuss non-shipment of NSP and reduction of the number of people working on software at Intel
  • Intel agrees to stop promoting NSP software

IBM announces that it is going to make Lotus SmartSuite its primary desktop software offering in the United States
July 20, 1995
Microsoft informs the IBM PC Company that Microsoft is terminating further negotiations with IBM for a license to Windows 95. Microsoft also refuses to release to the PC Company the Windows 95 "golden master" code.
August, 1995
Netscape Communications IPO. Stock goes public at $28/share. By December 5, it is trading at $171/share.
August 2, 1995
Bill Gates threatens to withdraw Windows support for forthcoming Intel microprocessors if Intel continued developing platform-level software that competed with Microsoft. Intel agrees to stop developing platform-level interfaces that might draw support away from interfaces exposed by Windows.
August 9, 1995
Microsoft agrees to accept a lump-sum payment from IBM to settle outstanding audits, the amount of which was dependent on IBM's willingness to withdraw preinstallation of SmartSuite for 6 months to 1 year. IBM does not agree.
August 21, 1995
DOJ and Microsoft agree on consent decree to settle original dispute
August 24, 1995
  • Microsoft grants a pre-install license for Windows 95 to IBM 15 minutes prior to the start of Windows 95 launch event
  • Microsoft launches Windows 95 and Internet Explorer 1.0
October, 1995
Microsoft releases details of its Remote Network Access (RNA) API to Netscape, 3 months after it was available to others
November, 1995
Microsoft releases Internet Explorer 2.0
