Linus Torvalds begins the creation of the open-source Linux operating system
Spring, 1992
IBM releases OS/2 2.0
April, 1992
Microsoft ships Windows 3.1

Marc Andreesen and Eric Bina develop a web client, soon to be named NCSA Mosaic, at the University of Illinois
March 26, 1993
Lou Gerstner becomes CEO of IBM

IBM releases OS/2 2.10
1994
Linux 1.0 is released

  • Jim Clark and Marc Andreesen form Mosaic Communications, later to be renamed Netscape Communications
  • Spyglass is given license by the University of Illinois to handle all future commercial licensing of Mosaic for NCSA
July 25, 1994
DOJ sues Microsoft alleging that it is an unlawful monopoly and in restraint of trade in the market for PC operating system software. The U.S. further alleges that Microsoft has engaged in anti-competitive marketing practices directed at PC manufacturers.

Mosaic Communications announced its first products: a network navigator called Mosaic Netscape, and a server line called Mosaic Netsite
October, 1994
IBM releases OS/2 Warp Version 3
December, 1994
  • Netscape's chairman and chief executive officer (CEO), Jim Clark, tells a Microsoft executive that the focus of Netscape's business would be applications running on servers and that Netscape did not intend to succeed at Microsoft's expense.
  • Microsoft licenses web browsing code from Spyglass which forms the foundation of Internet Explorer

Netscape Communications releases completely revised browser, called Navigator
