Orangutans! The orangutans are an endangered species that dwell on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra, that is southeast asia. They are getting closer to the brink of extinction each day, as thier habitat disappears little by little. |
Orangutans are omnivores, meaning they eat plants and small animals. But their diet is mostly fruit, leaves, seeds, tree bark, plant bulbs, tender plant shoots, and flowers. On occasion, they eat insects and small animals (like birds and small mammals). Because orangutans are arboreal, they don't come down to drink water; they drink water that has collected in the holes between tree branches.
As many other apes, orangutans are extreamly intelligent. They are able to use surrounding objects as tools. Leaves can become umbrellas or cups to help them drink water. Orangutans are shy, solitary animals who usually live alone in large territories. |

This is probably because these apes need a large quantity of food, and too many orangutans in one area may lead to starvation. The only social groups these apes form consist of a mother and her offspring, living together for seven years. When mating, the couple are only together for a few days. When a male is ready to mate, he makes a long call. Males have a large throat sac that lets them make these loud calls. These calls, that can carry through the forest up to one kilometer, call to females, as well as claim his territory. Like most animals, orangutans live longer in captivity than in the wild. That is, 50 years in captivity and 30 to 45 years in the wild. In an effort to conserve these diurnal beauties, many zoos have taken these apes into captivity. This includes the World Famous San Diego Zoo, National Zoo in Washington, D.C., and Sedgwick County Zoo. The pongo pygmaeus pygmaeus is from Borneo. These creatures have a round face with dark red hair. While the pongo pygmaeus abelii is from Sumatra, and these apes have much more narrow face and paler hair. These two are subspecies. Some scientists think that these two groups of orangutans are different subspecies, others think that they are not. Since these two groups of orangutans have been geographically separated for a long time, they are now physically distinct from each other. They are not different species since they are genetically similar enough to interbreed. |
