The winter carnival or “Hew Chaw Days” is a celebration close to winter’s end. The events take a person back to the roots of this community. At one time, many of the skills performed in the events were the skills needed to live in the bush.

The dog team races were once the highlight of the weekend. Trappers and their teams came in from the bush just to compete.

Other events include tea and bannock making, log sawing, flour packing, nail driving, snowshoe races and the moccasin scramble. There is fiddling, jigging and many a tall tale told too.

Occasionally special guests are invited. In 1983 Miss Canada attended “Hew Chaw Days” in Fort Vermilion.
