Bicentennial (1988)

The Fort Vermilion and District Bicentennial Association worked with provincial and regional organizations and community groups, to celebrate the beginning of recorded exploration, trade and settlement in the Fort Vermilion area.


A number of special events were held in and around Fort Vermilion throughout 1988.

1. Bicentennial Ball (New Year's Eve) (January)

2. Olympic Torch Run and Ceremony (February)

3. Mennonite Piano Concerto and the showing of the film "And When They Shall Ask". (April)

4.  100th Anniversary Synod of the Anglican Diocese of Athabasca

5. Indian Assembly of Alberta Annual Meeting

6. Bicentennial Homecoming Parade and Ceremony  (July - August) which included the unveiling of the National Historic Sites Cairn by Prime Minister Brian Mulroney.


7. Country Music Festival at "Buttertown" (North Vermilion)

8. Church Reunions and Services

9. Ducks Unlimited Wild Game Supper

To further commemorate the Bicentennial, the Association published, in 1990, the history book titled "Fort Vermilion: People In Our Vast Trading North."  For copies please contact us.

The High Level Figure Skating Club performed "History on Ice" and during the Bicentennial Homecoming, the La Crete Pioneer Days event was held.  The Boreal Institute, at the University of Alberta hosted a Bicentennial Conference, the proceedings of which celebrated the heritage of Alberta's first settlements - Fort Chipewyan and Fort Vermilion.
