Swamp Scenes Part 1

Many of the trees are like islands in the shallow water of the swamp.

Photographs by Sherrie McPhee and Frank Odell

The scene is ancient, yet it is as modern as today. The airboat makes it possible to visit this strange environment without danger.

The clumps of green plants that appear to be floating are Water Hyacinth plants and they really are floating about. Water Hyacinth is a foreign plant that has taken over the river. The plant is killing many of the fish in the river.

There are many kinds of long neck birds in the basin.

Where The Tour Starts And Ends.

The Lone Cabbage is a fish camp and restaurant that specializes in exotic swamp food. Gator tail, bullfrog legs, shrimp and turtle (in season) all breaded and fried southern style. They have an endless supply of beer and on every other Sunday a local country band plays in the afternoon in an open air roofed room behind the restaurant. All-in-all an interesting experience.

Because of the tourist ships docking in Port Canaveral it is not uncommon to hear foreign languages being spoken. Most of the people who work there speak Florida Cracker English.

We have no connection with the Lone Cabbage other than we like the food there.
