Terrans, or Humanity: Terrans were surprised in their initial explorations of space to find themselves reasonably alone among the stars. The fervor for First Contact was heightened when an examination of interstellar traffic within the United Worlds gave scientists clues to search for interstellar societies. Further analysis for these telltale signs revealed that the Terrans did indeed have interstellar neighbors, three in fact. Signals and indications of interstellar societies exist to coreward, to spinward-rimward, and to trailing-rimward.

Vegans, The Coreward Race: The first to be located using the new techniques, nothing is known about the Coreward Race, except that the source of the signals seems to be from a variety of systems near Vega. Due to the star's proximity, popular media identifies the coreward race as the Vegans.

Fornacians, The Spinward-Rimward Race: This was the second neighboring race to be located through this research. Nothing is known about the Spinward-Rimward Race, except that the source of the signals seems to be from a variety of systems near Alpha Fornacis. The public followed the same pattern as they did with the coreward race, and refer to the spinward-rimward race as the Fornacians, due to the close presence of Alpha Fornacis.

Talihans, The Trailing-Rimward Race: Like the other two races, very little is known about the Trailing-Rimward Race. The signals from this race derive from star systems that are much further away, beyond the Taliha subsector. Following a similar pattern to the other two races, the trailing-rimward race is called the Talihans when mentioned by Confed scientists and media.

Other Races: Despite the cries of conspiracy theorists, the United Worlds, and later, the Confed, have denied any scientific discoveries indicating that an ancient starfaring culture existed in this region of space long ago, and have since died out. The rumors persist, however, of an ancient civilization that has captured the popular imagination. In entertainment media, they are called by such names as the Ancient Ones, the Predecessors, the Progenitors, and a variety of similar descriptions.

RESTRICTED DATA:

Vegans: In 2331, four years prior to the Great Civil War, the UW Stellar Navy discovered a small starship that transitioned from jumpspace into the outer system of the Zi Yiu star system, six parsecs coreward of Terra. Study of the starship revealed a technology here-to-fore unknown, as well as the corpse of the pilot, who was obviously not human. Preliminary research determined that the ship had misjumped, and the single crewmember had died due to failing life support systems while trapped in jump space. The presence of this ship, its pilot, and the implications of the ship's contents caused a schism within the military command structure that directly precipitated the Great Civil War and the foundation of the Confederation of Planets. Attempts to reverse-engineer the ship's technologies helped push the Federalists into TL11 during the Great Civil War. The current location of the ship, the corpse, and related technology is classified, highest level.

The Vegan corpse revealed the following physical data: It was roughly humanoid, bipedal, bilaterally symmetrical, and apparently moved about upright when alive. It measured 2.18m in height, and massed 70kg. It's head apparently served as a braincase, but it could not move or rotate. A hood-like fleshy structure covered the head, and contained two eyes, covered by a single transparent eyelid-like structure. Apparent auditory organs were located in a collar-like structure around the neck. The mouth was a vertical slit in the upper thoracic region; two mandibles were located inside the upper chest, apparently to grind food. Where the forearm and hand would be on a human, the corpse had three tentacles which might serve as manipulative organs. Its legs ended in broad, splayed feet. A vertical slit located ventrally in the lower abdomen appeared to serve as a urogenital opening. Without other specimens to examine, there is only speculation as to the nature of the corpse's gender and numerous details of the corpse's physiology.

Other Races: Contrary to public knowledge, United Worlds scientists have encountered sufficient evidence to indicate the prior existence of three separate interstellar civilizations that occupied worlds that are now considered part of the Confederation of Planets. Little is known about these three cultures, as all that remains are the remnants and ruins of their prior civilizations. Confed military researchers classify the three races as the Canisites, the Ancients and the Progenitors.

Canisites: The only evidence of the Canisites comes from a series of ruins found on the Canis moon in the Sirius system in 2287. Analysis of the ruins reveals that the Canisites possessed late TL8 or early TL9 technology, and may have travelled at sublight speeds to Canis from another world. It is known that the ruins are between 10,000 and 11,000 years old, and that the destruction of the Canisite presence was quick and devastating, based on the ruins that remain as a testament to this lost civilization.

Ancients: The inexplicable artifacts of the Ancients have been found on a number of moons and planets in the outer systems of worlds to spinward of the Core Worlds. Ancient sites are often found in ruin, with interesting evidence of highly advanced military technology being used in their destruction. The artifacts discovered in these sites suggests an incredibly high level of technology, far beyond anything the Confed has accomplished to date (easily TL14+). The age of the various ruins that remain suggest that the Ancients lived within this region of space some 20,000 years ago or more, before their total annihilation at the hands of a foe that left no other signs of their passage. This lack of evidence leads some to suggest that the Ancients may have killed themselves off in some sort of genocidal suicide war. It is all speculation, however, until solid evidence can be found to shed some light on the matter. The Ancients were fairly widespread, and despite the nature of their destruction, Confed researchers know the most about them out of all the 'Other Races.'

Progenitors: The Progenitors are a mysterious race that have left behind perplexing pyramids on numerous worlds, all dated at more than 50,000 years old, and some as old as 100,000 years. The knowledge of the existence of the Progenitors has been kept secret since the days prior to interstellar travel, when the UNSCA located a site on Charon in the Terra system centered on a large pyramid of black stone with no perceptable means of admittance. Of all the so-called 'Other Races', the least is known about the Progenitors.
