31 Dec 1862, Dawn was a foggy, wet winter morning, when suddenly, Confederate muskets pierced the eerie silence. It surprised the sleeping Union soldiers who scrambled to their positions. Before the battle ended 2 Jan 1863, more than 83,000 men had fought at Stones River near Murfreesboro, TN. Nearly one-third of the men became casualties; both sides claimed victory.
