12. Joseph Scallinger
WILKINSON #1 was born on 21 Oct 1848 in , Pike, AL.
(51) He appeared on Census in 1850 in , Pike, AL.
(52) He appeared on Census in 1860 in , Santa Rosa, FL.
(53) He had a Saw Mill about 1870 in Yellow River Dist.
Bob & I went up to Miller Bluff & Wilkinson Bluff on the Yellow
River in Nov of 1996 to look for the grave of Joseph's step-mother Tincy
Grantham WILKINSON. It was stated in the Wm James BIBLE that she was buried
at MILLER's BLUFF. We got our maps out & had no trouble locating the
BLUFFS. When we got there, we drove right by it, as it is quite wooded
& very beautiful. We went down to the river where there were a few
houses & trailers. I knocked on one & the man was very helpful.
Drove back a little ways & sure enough, there was an open space. The
VFW had just cleaned it up & we didn't get any scratched ankles. Did
not find any WILKINSON Graves, but did find Charles HELM, who was the father
of Jason. Jason married Joseph's widow Emily. This leads me to the conclusion
that Joseph was also buried there, as WILKINSON Bluff isn't very far by
boat or road. Also, the original HELM's house had been moved to this location.
After taking pictures & exploring the area, we drove to WILKINSON
BLUFF. There we found a FISH Camp & the man came out to talk to us.
Walked down to the river & he showed us the posts, about 5 or 6 in
the river. He explained how they had pounded them by hand, having to stand
on a raft. These posts in the river had to be about 125 years old &
still standing. They were used to catch the logs floating down the river.
He also showed us the few remains of the Saw Mill & told us it had
been owned by the WILKINSON family.
We need to go back up & check the post, as in 1998 there was a
very high flood, which may have taken them out. He died on 6 Oct 1879 in
, Santa Rosa, FL. (54)(51)
He was married to Emily METTS on 24 Nov 1870 in , Santa Rosa, FL.
