What is it? An electronic portfolio is a documentation of information that reflects work samples, accomplishments, and unique talents of a student using technology as the agent of creation and storage. With the technology explosion, to include the worldwide internet, I feel there is no doubt that electronic portfolios will be one of the primary means of communicating data about you to teachers, parents, and businesses of the 21st century. Electronic portfolios will allow chidren to not only sharpen computer skills but also give them a wider media to express their feelings. How does one get started? In order to teach the process of creating an electronic portfolio, the teacher must be very comfortable and knowledgeable about the electronic software selected. Additionally, teachers may find some students that may be competent in the selected software. Take advantage of this opportunity to allow these students to help in the instruction process. Several software programs can produce excellent portfolios. However, each school should look at several software packages before deciding which one or ones best meets the needs of the students and teachers. You might find out that you want to use more than one product. Some electronic portfolio programs may be more geared to primary, and others to intermediate, middle, or high school. I feel these portfolios should begin in kindergarten and follow the student through all grades. However, it is obvious that such massive information could not be stored on a floppy. The alternatives are either Zip Disk, CD, or a School Server that stores all the work on a master hard drive. . |
