BASSIN' WATERS

SHELBYVILLE LAKE

Click for Shelbyville, Illinois Forecast

My first look at Lake Shelbyville drew a puzzled look from me, all I could see was bare banks and the lack of standing timber on the main lake. I fished it with a guy that new no more about this lake then me, we didn't have a lake map and his LCR's were not working. I went the full day without even one bite. Now, when I look at this lake I see my favorite lake in Illinois. The bass range from small schooling bass to large rod breakers. There are wooded coves, grassy points, and alot of buck brushes where bass love to hide and attack from.

(Spring/PreSpawn)Slow is the name of the game, look for long slopping shallow points. A good lake map is a must, follow map contour to the Bass's staging points and areas. Try Colornia rigged Lizards, Worms and believe it or not Slug-O's worked real slow!!!

(Spring/Spawn)Where ever you find Buck Brushes stay close and look for spawning bed's they won't be to far away from them so don't stray to far away and you will find Bass. Find these bushes inside of coves and start pitching a Texas Rigged (pegged) soft plastics onto the bed's itself. Keep a close eye on other area's around and in the bushes you are fishing, if you see anything move then you know where your next target is.

(Summer) Fish early or late, mid-day is really rough. Top water is great along rocks and downfalls, try Chug'n-bugs or Pop-R they are the lures I start with. As topwater slows, I tie on chrome and blue Rat-l-trap and a black and blue plastic crawdad. Rake the trap though buck brushs, (don't worry you should be able to pull through them ok) but if you do get hung up, act like you are setting the hook and give alittle extra tug to pull it through that's where you should get a hit and pick up a fish.

(Fall) Boy do I love this time of year, it's simple and fool proof. Flip or pitch texas rigged (pegged) plastic crawdads into the buck brushes. Hang on the hawgs are in them.
