BASSIN' WATERS
OF
SOUTHERN ILLINOIS

COFFEEN LAKE

Click for belleville, Illinois Forecast

This is a heated powerplant lake that can be fished year round. There is a 25hp limit but it is well worth the time and effort just to go strictly on trolling motor if your main motor is to big. You can locate underwater weedbeds, weedlines, stump rolls, long grassy points and sheltered coves. There is alot of good size bass in this lake due to the warm water allowing the bass a longer growing season. This is one of the best year round lakes here in southern Illinois.

Season: (Spring/PreSpawn) Spring is alittle hard to get a handle on, as to when the fish thinks spring is due the warm water, the best thing I can tell you is to head out when you know that you can handle the cold weather. The warm water discharge arm is the best part of this lake at this time of year. Think small slow baits that you can get a good hook set on, also reminber the bites will be really soft so be ready. That small tap may not be a blue gill so set the hook.

(Spring/Spawn) Water temp is going to be your guide at this time of the year. I look for the warmest water on the lake then look for the nearest shallow water that is clear. That could mean between the shore and weed beds, you may think that it is to small an area for a bass to bed in, but don't be fooled even six inches of water may hold that bass you are looking for. Keep a close eye on your line bass love to run off their bed with your lure. Try lizards, git-zits, and spinnerbaits at this time of the year.

(Summer) It is now time to go Rat-L-Trapping, early summer try a red one, later on go with the standard Chrome/blue. Rake them over underwater weedbeds just tipping the very tops of them. This is also a good time if year (if the water is at normal pool or above) to start making small flips and pitches to small open pockets of weeds. This can be a real productive way of fishing. Don't forget to try early morning top water it is a real thrill in itself, a Pop-R are a Chuggin bug is the way to go. Most fishermen this time of year fish the edge of the weeds but the trick is to get right into them.

(Fall) The best thing I can tell you about this lake at this time of year is come early and stay late. Top water and small crank baits inside coves that have schools of shad in them. Work around small clumps of weeds and the fish will be there.
