BASSIN' WATERS
OF
SOUTHERN ILLINOIS

KINKAID LAKE

Click for Carbondale, Illinois Forecast

This is my second favorite lake is southern Illinois. Lake Kincaid is an all around fun lake not only for fishing, but also for boating, water skiing or just enjoying a day on the water. It is the best lake for bass as far as numbers are concerned then any other lakes in this part of the state. This lake is also very capable of producing that wall hanger that every bass fisherman is looking for. However, there is currently a slot limit on the lake, but don't let that stop your fun it is a really great lake.

(Spring/Pre-Spawn) I have spent five years fishing this lake an I fell in love with it's no wake area. The no wake area has every type of structure that you could ever want. Fish soft plastic jerkbaits (Slug-O's/Shadow) at this time of year, look for laydowns near deeper water. At this time of year they roam up from deep water to feed and then head back to deeper water. Expect the fish you catch to be whiter and paler then normal.

(Spring/Spawn)This is nothing but fun and hawg hunting time of year and after you try it I am sure that you will agree with me. There is just one statement to make here and that is "Lizards, Lizards and more Lizards" that is the rule of thumb. Watch your Depthfinder for shallow water and a quick deeper water break. Start by looking for were the channel runs close to the shoreline or a cove with a creek channel running into it. Flip or pitch Texas rigged Lizards, always watching for beds or slightly muddy spots were a bass may be fanning a bed. The water should be clear this time of year so stay way back from where you are trying to cast to, and after you do watch your line to twitch or start to move. Also, look for the warmest water in the area at this time of year.

(Summer)The heat of the day is a hard period of time to fish at any lake, so start out early, I like getting on the water before daylight. Try top water first thing in the morning along the sides of weedbeds and shallow water timber. As the sun rises about mid morning start pitching a (pegged) Texas rigged crawdad into open weed pockets. Also if the water is clear (not stained) down size your bait and go to something like a 4 inch worm. Later in the afternoon look for grassy points and try a Texas rigged 6 or 7 inch worm or a Colorina rigged worm.

(Fall) The main lake will have a lot of schooling shad, Rat-L-Traps along the side of the school if you see the shad being busted. If the trap don't work go with a worm and remember that the bigger fish are closer to the bottom and will wait for injured shad to fall to them. The now wake area will also hold some shad but go into the back of the coves to find them, schooling bass will chase them all over just don't spook the shad and you should have a real good time.
