GLOSSARY

Look at a traditional birchbark canoe, from Native Org: http://www.nativeweb.org/NativeTech/brchbark/bigcanoe.htm

TOP VIEW

The ratio between width (beam) and length gives a speed boat with low ratio (ex. 1:10) or a cargo boat for fishing with high ratio (ex. 1:3)

Old Town Canoe specifications (historical): http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/specific.gif

CUTAWAY

THE SIDES

Sides with tumblehome are comfortable to paddle. Frare ones help to keep waves outside. Plumb is a compromise

THE BOTTOM

A round bottom is not very stable and is used mainly in races. A flat bottom is good for big charges. An arch bottom is a good and usual compromise. A "V" bottom is also good for speed, but is difficult to turn

SIDE VIEW

A high rocker canoe is good for quick pivots and turns in a river, a straight keel is berrer suited for speed on flat water
