Who Should Coach
2002-03 Edition

After about six months of trying to figure out who should take the helm in the event of Rollie'd firing, I have brought up some names that make sense (Brian Gregory, Mitch Buonaguro) to the inane (Tim Floyd, Matt Doherty) to the impossible (Homer Drew, Kevin Mackey).

This time around, I have come up with what I think is a practical list of potential coaches, based on what kind of realistic chance CSU would have of getting them and what kind of good they could do for the program. Please note that this list will be changed from time to time to reflect new prospects.

Darren Tillis
Current Job - Asst. Coach, Clemson
Currently working under the tutelage of former CSU assistant coach Larry Shyatt, Tillis, one of the only Vikings ever to be drafted by the NBA, also was a teammate to current AD Lee Reed. His coaching experience in the ACC is probably the most impressive of the group.
Mike Moran
Current Job - Head Coach, John Carroll
Moran's name was associated with the CSU coaching vacancy after Mike Boyd's firing back in 1996. His name would no doubt come up once again in the event of Rollie's departure. His JCU squad has fell on hard times in recent years, but he showed folks this season that teams don't need a marquee player to succeed, as the Blue Streaks made it to the second round of the D3 NCAA Tournament.
Geno Ford
Current Job - Asst. Coach, Kent State
The name Geno Ford came up early last year, as he led an NAIA Shawnee State squad to a 180 degree turnaround in the course of one season. That led to the former Ohio U. star's chance at the big time, which he accepted the assistant coaching job at Kent. His offense at SSU was certainly high-powered, and anything he can do at Kent State could only help his cause.
Gene Cross
Current Job - Assistant Coach, DePaul
Cross certainly has the credentials and the knowledge of the Horizon League, being a former assistant coach at UIC who was instrumental in the recruiting of current Flame standouts Martell Bailey and Cedrick Banks. Like Ford, he's on the rise, and the Vikes should definitely take a look.
Mickey Barrett
Current Job - Assistant Coach, Detroit Mercy
It's a new name for some, but in this area, he's been around the block. The longtime assistant to Perry Watson is well-known around the local high school and AAU programs, as a former assistant at St. Ed's. And he would also win first place at a P.J. Carlesimo look-alike contest.
Ron Hunter
Current Job - Heach Coach, IUPUI
Picture if you will a man coming into a Division II school with only nine wins the previous season. Then watch them make such a turnaround that they make a jump to Division I. And then watch them win 20 games and get into the NCAA tournament for the first time ever. That's what Ron Hunter has accomplished in his nine seasons at IUPUI, and that's the kind of resurrection job that's needed at CSU. Oh, and he's beaten Rollie twice.
