The Grunt Page
This page is dedicated to the foot soldiers of all wars. While I've currently only got stuff from Viet Nam, I'll be looking for some earlier pictures, from WWII and Korea, as well as from the Gulf War.
The faces of the two men in the upper pictures show what getting ready for an ambush is all about. Fear and apprehension rode hand in hand during the minutes just before the trap was sprung.
For anyone who has the stomach for it, go to my page dedicated to the Tet Offensive. Be advised: The pictures on this page are graphic and explicit. They are not for the weak hearted. There are pictures of dead bodies, wounded GI's and raw combat.
Firefight! It's all in the pot now, snake! Hours of boredom and waiting punctuated by minutes of sheer terror and chaos. To someone, like our President, who's never been there, it's impossible to describe what being in a firefight is like. He should try it. Maybe he wouldn't be so willing to spend lives like he does.
On patrol. Search & Destroy. Checking for Charlie. Humping the boonies. Call it what ever you want, patrolling the area around a base camp  was serious business. Ambushes, booby traps, and chance meetings were all deadly.
Pinned down! L.T., call  for support! The worst possible scenario played itself out time and again  when troops were the victims rather than the perpetrators of an ambush. Artillery or airborne support were usually the only way out of this kind of situation.
Fire Mission! Coordinates 3-5-2-1-8-7. Three rounds HE! Fire for effect! Over!
We've got wounded! Urgently request Dust Off, over! Short, furious firefights invariably led to wounded troops. Thanks to the brave helicopter pilots, more men survived grievous wounds than in any war before this one. Helicopters would be on the scene, sometimes before the fighting was over to medivac the wounded to nearby  aid stations and hospitals.
