+ WARS +

This photo was taken on September 11th, the day, which meant so much to all of the Americans. The image shows 5 firefighters running into the scene of destruction, that is, the world trade center, to rescue the injuries. The dust results from the collapsed of the World Trade Center fills the whole image and it seems that the firefighters are running into a place of desperations. The firefighters appear trivial when comparing to the enormous destructions and it shows the connotation that human are  vulnerable when they are facing the catastrophe. Although there are rays of sunbeam penetrating through the mist and shined on the firefighters, they do not represent hopes, they just looks like the stage lights “welcoming” the sacrificed heroes. The “For-Fun” banner hanging on the wall is kind of ironic. The whole nation is filled with grief and the firefighters are rescuing as much victims as they can. Under this circumstance, "For Fun" seems to be a curse greeted by an evil. The whole ground is covered by fragmented cement and lumbers, and one can imagine what a tremendous consequence was resulted from the collapsed of the Twins Tower ( The World Trade Center). "Group images tended to be less graphic than those of individuals, partly because the rarely visible eyes and faces worked against the possibility of identifying the victims being depicted" (Zelizer 431). From this image, we can see that the photographer does not want to show the faces of the firefighters, who are part of the victims of the 911 attack.
