Starvation

This is an Ethiopian child who is suffering from starvation, as we can see from his skinny arms and prominent ribs. “ The gaze of emaciated, near-dead survivors, whose eyes seemed not to comprehend the target of vision, tended to be frontal and appeared to signify frankness” (Zelizer 434). It is true when describing this image. The boy looks fragile and vulnerable. His skinny arms catch my very first attention, as they are impossibly thin. He looks helpless and hopeless, with his hand placing on his forehead. His cheek sinks and he looks really sick. He was so skinny that his ribs resembles the wrinkled, folded skin. The black skin and the white cloths of the boy form great contrast, which makes the boy’s body shape more obvious. His big head also strikes my heart, as the size of his head and the size of his body are disproportionate. He is wrapped by dirty white clothes with a lot of dust on it. The background seems to be a dusty cabinet and has no facilities or a piece of furniture. The boy takes up most of the space of this image and he is placed right in the middle. I think the photographer wants to arise audiences sympathies from the poor boy. Ethiopia is a country, which suffers from serious problem of starvation, drought and poverty. I can not imagine how many Ethiopians were living under the severe environment. It is sarcastic to hear that there are millions of people die of starvation while Americans are thinking of remedies to fight against obesity.
