What is Youth United?
� Youth ages 5-25 sponsor and build a Habitat home with a local family
� Plan the build from start to finish
� Raise money to build the home
� Raise awareness of poverty housing by writing news articles, speaking to the press, and making presentations
� Build the home

Why Get Involved?

� Learn the plight of the needy and the value of helping others
� Make the dream of owning a home come true for a family
� Build a home from start to finish
� Develop leadership, social and construction skills
� Apply academic skills (math, writing, speech) to real-life projects
� Work with a diverse group and make new friends
� Make a difference in your community

What can adult leaders do?
� Spark ideas
� Guide, not manage
� Teach about poverty housing using Habitat�s Teacher Resources (See
www.habitat.org/ccyp/teacher_youth_leader
� Teach about construction
� Teach academic skills such as math, writing, and speech
� Monitor progress, keep youth focused on getting results
� Insure different groups are working toward common goals

What Can the Youth Do?

Ages 18-25
� Be the �Youth Board� which oversees the entire project.
� Mentor and teach younger youth
� Manage project from concept to finish
� Provide leadership including setting the vision and goals
� Supervise & coordinate a large group with diverse interests and experience
� Perform preconstruction tasks: planning, floor plan, material lists, building permit, construction schedule, coordinate subcontractors, material ordering lead time
� Perform all construction tasks that other ages are not allowed to do
� Write grants as part of fundraising

Ages 16-17
� Take a leadership role and be on one of the �Youth Board� committees
� Assist in planning the project, including fundraising, developing materials list, ordering materials, and scheduling
� Lead specific aspects of the project
� Mentor and teach younger youth
� May use hand tools on job site
Ages 14-15
� Pick-up and delivery of materials
� Fundraising, including recycle program
� Advocacy including letter writing and presentations
� Mentor and teach younger youth
� Painting
� Landscaping

Ages 5-13
� Not allowed on jobsite while construction is going on
� Fundraising, including recycle program
� Advocacy � letter writing and presentations
� Assist in warehouse
