2009 Women Build
KILLEEN, Texas (January 10th, 2009) -- The Fort Hood Area Habitat for Humanity kicked off its 2009 Women Build project with a ground-breaking event on Saturday, January 10th, 2009 at 8:00 am at 1204 Missouri Ave  in Killeen.  This new home, for the Castille Family, is also part of the Habitat for Humanitys Women Build program, which is underwritten by Lowes.

All homes built as part of the  Women Build homes, makes homeownership a reality by recruiting, nurturing and training women volunteers to construct and maintain simple, decent and affordable homes, allowing women from all walks of life to help families build better futures for children. More than 800 Habitat homes have been built by women crews since 1991.

Fort Hood Area Habitat for Humanity constructed its first Women Build home in 2002 and everyone who participated found the experience rewarding and fun, said Gene Bauer, executive director of Fort Hood Habitat. Were looking forward to working with a great group of motivated and enthusiastic women to help do our part here in Killeen to provide safe, affordable housing for a family in need.

In addition to being a great way to help a familys dream of homeownership come true Habitat Women Build work sites also offer volunteers an opportunity to gain basic construction skills in a comfortable learning environment.  Volunteers can get a jump-start on their building skills by attending How-To clinics offered at Lowes stores and are provided tools, safety equipment, training and lunch on the build site.

This home is being built in partnership with the Castille Family and has been made possible by Lowes Home Improvement, The United Way of the Greater Fort Hood Area , The City of Killeen HOME Program , First United Methodist Church, Killeen , Immanuel Lutheran Church , and St. Christophers Episcopal Church.

Any and all volunteers, skilled or unskilled, are welcome at any time.  Groups of five or more are asked to call in advance so that Habitat can make the proper arrangements for lunch.  Individuals or groups that would be willing to provide lunch for other volunteers are also invited to call and participate.  Interested groups, especially womens groups, who would like to participate in building this home, are encouraged to call the Habitat office at 680-4007.
