Chemistry: A Preferred Science Major

Continued From Page 3

Dr. Ferroni got his undergraduate degree in chemistry at Wheeling College, in Virginia. After graduating from Wheeling, Ferroni went to Indiana University Medical Center. He got a doctorate in Biochemistry.
While in chemistry he had trouble in some of his major classes, just like most people. The class that he had trouble with just happened to be Physical Chemistry. Ferroni said the reason he did not get it or why other people don't get it "is because it's so abstract." He also said that he "never got a good picture" therefore he never understood it. It is one hard subject to understand and many people have problems with it.
There are a lot of job openings for people who come out of the chemistry field. There was no trouble finding a job when he got out of college, and it is the same way now. There were a lot of factory jobs and school jobs for him when he got out of school. He had no trouble finding a job because, "I was willing to go anywhere and relocate." Chemistry is a tough major to get into but if students stick with it the rewards are great when they attempt to find jobs after college. The students can do a lot in the job field depending on how far one goes into chemistry. Students can go into medicine, which is pharmacy and that takes a lot of time and having to ensure a lot of studying to pass all the classes. There are laboratory jobs as well, students can go in to labs and work with chemicals, or there are factory jobs that are open to students that choose chemistry.
"You need to major in something you like," Ferroni said. In order to do well in chemistry you have to like math and chemistry, because if you don't you will have a hard time in the field and getting through college with it as a major.
