Chemistry: A Preferred Science Major
By: Nick Folliard
| One of the biggest fears when going to college
is picking a major. People who choose to major in science have to stick
out from the rest. Students who decide to major in chemistry are unique
individuals because the workload is so great and they need to have a lot
of study time. In order for students to become chemistry majors, they should be willing to work really hard. That is the only way to understand the material and learn it. The work is hard at times seeing chemistry basically has a lot to do with math and a lot of formulas. So don't be discouraged if you don't get it right away, one just needs to stick with it. The chemistry major brings a certain type of student to make good grades and into the field itself. Dr. Edward Ferroni, professor and chairman of the chemistry department at Benedictine University, said "Somebody who likes math," should have chemistry as a major. If someone likes math and is good at it, then they will do better in chemistry. The reason is that chemistry involves a lot of math is because computations of equations and formulas. It also helps if the student likes chemistry and if he/she has a high school background in it. They should be able to understand the material at least a little bit. In order to fully understand chemistry at the college level, students should have some sort of background, because he/she should know how to do some things: but if one never had chemistry then it's like a foreign language to them and hard to understand. |
