| Flytying is decorating a fishing hook so that a fish
thinks it is a food item. For
example a flytyer makes a hook imitate a fly on the surface of the water. Or the hook may
be disguised as a creepy crawly living under the water.
The fly-hook in the above photograph has
been tied, or 'dressed', to imitate a Sedge Fly or a Caddis Fly, scurrying over the
surface of the water as it tries to take off and fly away. If a hungry fish is deceived by
the flytyer's creation then it will attempt to eat the 'fly'.
We enjoy flytying as a pleasant
hobby and a sociable pastime. We go flyfishing too and enjoy using the flies we've tied.
We invite you to join us
We can even advise on the location of
other branches of the Flydressers' Guild. Each branch places a different emphasis on
flytying, and flyfishing and guest speakers. But every branch welcomes visitors and new
members. Help and advice is always available on request.
The Flydressers' Guild has some amazingly
skilful members, and some are professional flytyers, but everyone is equally welcome.
Beginners please do not hesitate to follow your curiosity and visit a branch meeting. Help
and advice is always available.
Everyone can enjoy flytying in their own
way. There is not a right and a wrong way to tie flies ...
only different ways ...
Some members
never tie flies at meetings. They come along to watch and chat, preferring to tie at home
or to buy their flies from retailers and professional tyers.
