authentic chinese food delicacies patronized by the
Filipino-Chinese community since the 1960s. Diao Eng Chay,
as commonly called by older generation Philippine Chinese,
expanded from it's original store in Binondo to several others
in the Metro Manila area.
Some of
their baked specialties are: plain pao bread that can
either be steamed and used for cuapaos or fried like the
taiwanese pao bread, camote flour sweet bread buns, ampao or
red crispy rice with hollow centers - a favorite among
children, sticky rice based puto, pumpkin cakes, radish cakes,
taro based cakes with shitake mushrooms, tsai pao or vegetable
pies in sticky sweet potato flour pockets, almond cakes,
sticky rice based sweets, etc. Other food delicacies include:
machang, taochang, kikiam, small intestine in soy, white
chicken, asado pork, siomai, sharks fin siomai, barbecue, mini
siopaos and other pre-prepared food such as dried pork and
beef jerky, dried pork and fish floss, chinese sausages,
salted eggs, a variety of chinese canned goods and preserved
foods and drink mixtures, etc.
DEC is also
known for the original ice slush drink, ice plus milk
based slush of assorted fruits, flavors and condiments, a
favorite among the kids and the young at heart.
Recently,
Diao Eng Chay launched DEC Light, a new expansion from the
traditional food and bakery store, catering to the more
upscale and more health conscious market of today's
generation. Their specialties include a variety of green
salads and wheat based pasta cooked only with a mixture of
olive oil, fresh spices and protein, such as seafood or extra
lean ground beef. DEC Light is the place of choice for gym
buffs and those who adhere to a good carb, low sugar diet
regimen. You can also find a selected array of their best traditional baked food
sold in these stores.
