Some Exciting Changes in Our Worship
What is Convergence Worship? Well, for one thing... it's something you're going to be seeing a lot more of here at Otsego Congregational! And, that's exciting on so many levels! God's Word says that we are to worship Him with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs (Eph 5:19, Col 3:16), and Convergence Worship (also called Blended Worship) is a means for involving all three musical styles in the worship service, thus allowing us to offer something for everyone.
Yes, that means you may hear some music that isn't going to make your "favorites list," but it also means that in the mix will be many songs that do stir your soul. Imagine for a moment that you're at the grocery store, and that you hate (insert your least favorite food here). You're going down the aisles with your grocery list in hand and getting all those items that you have on your list. Since you really hate your least favorite food, it probably isn't on your list. Now you get to the aisle where your least favorite food is and Hark! there it is! Right there on the shelf! Your least favorite food! What do you do? Do you overturn your grocery cart, knock all the food off the shelves in a fit of rage, and turn to whomever you're with and say: "Look at that, they sell (your least favorite food) here! I'm never coming back to this store again!"? Of course you don't. You just say to yourself, "There's no room in my cart for that today," you leave it on the shelf, and you take home the meat and the bread and the potatoes and the things you do like. You can do that here at church, too. Take home the songs you like and leave the ones you don't for someone else, being ever mindful that everything you hear at this church will glorify God and be a blessing to someone in the congregation... a brother or sister in the Lord.
That said, the musical mix in our worship services will range from classic traditional hymns to modern praise and worship songs you've already been hearing here these past four years. The selection of musical styles won't change, but what will change as this new music ministry takes shape is the way in which the music is presented. The overhead projector with it's loud fan and bulky presence in the aisle will be replaced in the near future with a ceiling-mounted computer-operated projection system (which will be used in other functions of the church as well). The vocal ensemble we've had in recent years will be complemented with some additional instrumentation... possibly a conga drum, a tambourine, an occasional fife, and hopefully (if someone will contribute their spiritual gift of music to this ministry) a guitar or two. We'll continue to bring in outside groups for special music from time to time, such as the gospel quartets, praise bands, and soloists that have blessed our services in the recent past, and information with regard to that will be posted on this website.
Please feel free to make any suggestions or comments you may have in regard to the music ministry with the knowledge that they will be prayed over and given due consideration as we work together to shape this branch of our ministry, "that God would be glorified in all things through Christ Jesus forever and ever" (I Peter 4:11). This shift to Convergence Worhsip will help to expand the breadth and range of our outreach in this community, allowing us to better minister to the whole body of Christ in all its diversity. Rejoice over the changes we're making, for they will help us to succeed to an even greater degree in expanding the Kingdom of Our Lord!
For His Glory,
