Glasses Assistance Program

When Lions Clubs were first organized by Melvin Jones, in 1917, one of the main issues that faced the new organization as it rapidly grew was, "what should our main purpose be". Lions International history reports: "In 1925, Helen Keller addressed the Lions International convention in Cedar Point, Ohio, USA. She challenged Lions to become "knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness." From that time, Lions Clubs have been actively involved in service to the blind and visually impaired."

Over the years, many different fundraisers, including "blind seals" were used to fund the various vision programs. To see a "slideshow" of vintage "blind seals" "Click Here. These old "seals" make for interesting viewing, and are an interesting peak into our history.

The Lions Club of Frostbnurg is actively involved in in sight preservation, vision screening, and other activities related to eye care and blindness.

One of our primary focuses is assistance with the purchase of glasses. We maintain a very viable program just for this purpose.

We maintain a program with Quality Eyewear of Frostburg and a program with Wal-Mart. Through these program we provide, to qualified individuals, up to $100.00 towards the cost of glasses and frames. We do not pay for eye examinations, except in very unique circumstances.

In addition to the Wal-Mart form, we also have a voucher that is used in special circumstance.
