Magazine Review
Vogue Australia - December 2003

Words: Masha Marsheva.

In a special edition featuring Karl Lagerfeld as guest editor, Vogue Australia celebrates the arrival of the New Year.

The December issue includes a feature on Fall's '03/'04 Couture collections, several editorials photographed by Mr. Lagerfeld himself, and interviews and articles written by the designer. Many of the fashion reports focus on the Lagerfeld-designed Chanel and Fendi lines, while on the whole, the fashion reports manage to reflect Karl's personal style in a distilled feminine form.

To be honest, the pointed focus on Chanel does get a little dry at times, sith some stars in the Style Reports looking positively ghastly in their 'scene-stealing' Chanel gowns...of course the most of the girls only proved what a gorgeously tailored garment by Chanel can do for a girl!

One of the highlights of the issue is a gorgeous article on the "Satellites" of Chanel (the five small independent studios that allow the house to create clothes that sell at the value of a small automobile...albeit more beautiful and thus undoubtedly far more worth the expense.

The issue also features an interview with Dior Homme menswear designer Hedi Slimane, a superb piece with Cate Blanchett as Coco Chanel, an article with Karl's comments on his diet and a feature on Kylie Minogue photographed by Lagerfeld that defines her as the glamorous princess she is.

Karl's articles and interviews are suffused with the designer's subtle piquancy. His photography, art and words are profoundly perceptive - whether they refer to himself or are portraying someone else. Karl's sense of grace, balance and style is apparent through the entire issue. The magazine offers readers a uniquely deep look into Lagerfeld's own soul.
