The Reception, the Cake

The Wedding cake was another item that was low on my priority list. I know many people would disagree, but that's what we'd decided. I had thought about having a big, extravagent cake, but I opted not to and came up wth of a better idea. Besides, I thought it would clash with the casual picnic feel of our wedding barbecue!  :)

The Successes...

Since I'd decided not to go with a typical wedding cake, I thought it would be a nice, personal touch to have home made cake. So I had asked a couple of friends and aunts to make a treat for the dessert table in lieu of gifts. Below is a picture of the "presenting" cake table. It was a small table, so I could only fit 3 out of the 5 cakes made for the wedding. The rest of the desserts went on the larger dessert table off to the side of the buffet.

The most beautiful cake was made by my friend, Lydia. I knew that  Lydia, made some beautiful and very tastey cakes. Lydia & I work in the same office and occasionally when she can, she brings in a home made cake for a birthday or shower or other special occaision for her team at work. So along with her wonderful chocolate cake (covered with pearl, and flowers), I made a cake (a chocolate, hazlenut cake, with raspberry filling, and chocolate fondant icing). I'd also asked my friends, Chantal and Sandra, to make a cake. (Chantal made the other one you see on the table, and it was a vanilla/chocolate checkerboard cake! I wish I took a pic of the inside. She covered it with buttercream frosting and lavender sprinkles!) I wanted cake that tasted good, so what tastes better than homeade cake? I thought it was special to have something like this incorporated in my wedding. It was a very nice, personal touch.  Besides, home-made cake ALWAYS tastes better since it's made with heart. However Lydia's cake was so beautiful, we used it for our "official" cake cutting. It was the best cake Doyle had tasted. He doesn't usually eat a lot of sweets and he had two slices!

The Glitch...

The cakes were so good, we didn't have any left! I tried to keep a slice of Lydia's cake to keep as the traditional "cake topper" that people freeze and eat on their first anniversary, but sad to say, someone found it and ate it! And I thought that taking a little bite from it would deter anyone from stealing it! My mistake, that cake was the favorite among them all.  :)  Thanks Lydia! You're the best!

In the picture above you can also see our decorated cake cutters and the flower petals we sprinkled all over the tables, around the head table and on the dance floor. It was beautiful.
